The Importance of Semi-public Space in New Urbanism Cities

뉴어바니즘은 미국에서부터 시작되어 전세계로 뻗어나가고 있는 도시개발의 한 형태이다. 이 논문은 뉴어바니즘의 요소들이 뉴어바니즘 도시의 공공레벨에 있어 실현여부를 플로리다 시사이드, 메릴랜드 켄트랜즈, 한국 정자1동의 세 도시를 분석하여 알아보고자 하였다. 첫 두 도시분석은 블로그와 다른 웹사이트에서 쓰인 텍스트들을 언어학적 코퍼스를 만들고 텍스트마이닝 프로그램인 ManyEyes를 이용하여 키워드를 분석하였다. 정자1동 주상복합 지역에서는 설문조사와 간단한 인터뷰가 이루어져 키워드들을 생성하여 뉴어바니즘 13개의 요소와 상관관계를 분석하였다. 질적데이터는 뉴어바니즘의 개발형태는 도시사용자들이 인식하고 기존의 도시형태들과 다른지에 대한 유무, 선호유무 및 원인을 분석하고 키워드들이 뉴어바니즘요소와 관계가 있는지에 대해 알아보았다. 결과는 뉴어바니즘의 요소들이 데이터에서 유추되었고 장소성에 기여하는 주 요소가 공공공간보다 전이공간에 더 나타났다. New Urbanism (NU) is a way of urban development that is popular in the USA and is spreading to the rest of the urban world, including Korea. This paper reviews how much realization of NU principles has been made at the public level by evaluating three sites based on the NU tenets: Seaside in Florida, Kentlands in Maryland and Jeongja 1 dong in Korea. Texts from blogs and other internet sites for the first two sites were collected to form a linguistic corpus, which was then analyzed for keywords using a text mining program called ManyEyes. Surveys and interviews were conducted for Jeongja 1 dong mixed-use area. The quantitative data were analyzed to determine if keywords in the text matched the 13 tenets of NU. The qualitative data were also analyzed to determine if different users of the area notice the way of its development and its uniqueness compared to non-NU sites, if and why they like or dislike it, and whether these reasons matched the 13 tenets of NU. Results indicate that some NU tenets occurred in the data set, but other keywords indicate that semi-public space, not public space, is a major factor in creating a sense of place.
