The purpose of this paper is to suggest the kind of spirituality the Korean church and its leaders ought to have through Peter’s suffering and prayer depicted in the Gospel of Mark. We will observe Peter’s spirituality and character depicted in the Gospel of Mark as follows: (1) Peter’s response to Jesus’ first calling to Peter (1:18; cf. 10:28-30), (2) Peter’s confession after the prophecy of Jesus’ suffering (8:31-32) and the meaning of ‘following’ (8:34-38), (3) Peter’s response to Jesus’ transfiguration (9:2-6) and the dialogue between Jesus and Peter (10:28-45), (4) Peter at Gethsemane(14:32-42), (5) Peter at the maid’s court(14:53-72; cf. 8:38), (6) Jesus’ invitation to Peter’s spiritual recovering(14:28 and 16:7). If suffering is the measurement utilized to gauge the spirituality of Mark, prayer is the source and power of his spirituality. This is of the same for the spirituality of Peter. In conclusion, while Peter failed to overcome the temptation of suffering through ‘watchful prayer’ when the time of suffering came to him, we learn that Jesus our Lord ultimately holds the power in initiating discipleship as well as its successful recovery.
