Thyroid hormones play a fundamental role in the initiation and maintenance of somatic growth in mammalian species, and the insulim-like growth factors(IGFs) occupy a position of central importance in the growth of all tissues. To evaluate the changes in serum insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3(IGFBP-3)in hyperthyroid patients, sera was obtained from 18 hyperthyroid patients and 5 healthy volunteers. IGF-I concentration was determined by radioimmunoassay, and changes in IFGBP-3 were assesed by Western Ligand Blotting. IGF-I levels were decreased significantly in hyperthyroid patients compaired to healthy control group. The mean IGF-I level was 257.62±57.24ng/ml in healthy control group, whereas is was significantly reduced to 167.17±83.09 ng/ml in hyperthyroid patients(p<0.005). Autoradiograph of IGFBPs in sera from patients with hyperthyroidism shows decreased intensity of IGFBP-3 bands(40-45 KD) in 40% of hyperthyroid patients, but there was no correlation between decreased intensity of IGFBP-3 band and decreased serum IGF-I levels.
