Nathaniel Hawthorn stressed the importance of imagination in American romance. He said that “a neutral territory, somewhere between the real world and fairy-land, where the Actual and Imaginary may meet, and each imbue itself with the nature of the other.”(35) In that territory, “the truth of the human heart” can be revealed. As the Hawthornean romance, readers can find the neutral territory in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” Walter Mitty, who is a middle-aged and little man, is located between the actual and imaginary world. He escapes from the actual life through daydreaming. In his daydreaming and imagination, he becomes a commander, captain, and crack shot that could be seen as an archetype of traditional masculinity. However, in an actual life, he is a kind of a henpecked man. His daydreaming can not be understood by his wife. Mrs. Mitty asks him to let Dr. Renshaw look him over, and she tries to check his temperature. Walter Mitty's imagination loses its strength in the principle of reality which is represent by his wife and the society which surrounds him.

Romance has been thought as archetype literary form. However, it is not suitable to think so because many texts employ the elements and names of romance. F. Scott Fitzgerald’ The Great Gatsby also has many romance elements and meaning. It has circular structure, magnificent mansions and supernatural elements. Besides, the hero, Gatsby sets off in quest of grail as if the medieval knight sets forth to seek adventure. The grail is to obtain the love of Daisy. Gatsby tried to obtain wealth because he thought the reason of their parting was money. He got money by dishonest means. And that was attacked by Tom. However, his effort to fulfill dream achieved recognition from Nick. The people in 1920s were blind in money but Gatsby had the reason to get money. After his death, Nick praises him because he did his best to fulfill his dream.

The works of male writers have been written to inject male dominant conventions and customs to readers. Accoding to Simone de Beauvoir, the image of woman represented by male writers is everything that man desires and fears. Therefore, the images of women in the fictions are distorted as the males demand and desire. The strategies of them are performed very confidentially. The writers tend to expose their ideas broadly that the females also have their own identity and will. However, the hidden aspects of the works have more crucial intention to control and organize typical object secretly. Therefore, I observe and examine the two works written by male writers, Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane to conclude that they also tried to keep and confirm male dominated feminity.
