The development of electronic control unit of particulate trap system using ceramic monolith filter requires a method for estimation of the accumulated mass of . T PM(total particulate malter) to control the proper timing of regeneration so as to avoid the thermal crack due to overloaded soot in the ceramic filter. Darcy's law for low Reynolds' number flow can offer a criterion to predict the accumulate mass of TPM by measuring intake airflow rate. exhaust gas tern perature. and differential pressure between the front and rear side of filter. The control algorithm adopting Darcy's law was evaluated in the engine bed test and vehicle test. The test results demonstrate the control algorithm successfuly predicts the accumulated mass of TPM by referring to look-up tables of pressure loss coefficients calculated for the engine operation conditions according to Darcy's law.<br/>

A particulate trap system with self regeneration method by meandered heating wires has been developed to be utilized for the small diesel vehicles. The design concept of the particulate trap system is based on minimization of the electric consumption during regeneration so as to be installed the diesel vehicles with the standard electric parts. The particulate trap system is composed of the specially designed mechanical and electronic parts and the control algorithm dedicated to the NA diesel engine of 3500cc engine displacement was developed to be implemented to the electronic control unit for the system. The particulate trap systems have been installed to the cargo trucks and garbage trucks and being operated to investigate the performance and durability in the field test.
