This paper proposes a circularly-polarized UHF RFID reader antenna consisting of a small ground plane, an alumina ceramic body, a rectangular patch with four dumbbell slots. An alumina ceramic body is employed to reduce the antenna size. A rectangular patch is realized on the alumina ceramic body and a circular polarization is obtained by adjusting the coaxial probe position and the amount of truncation of two patch corners. Four dumbbell slots are constructed on the patch diagonals to increase the bandwidth of the rectangular patch and to adjust the operating frequency. The operating frequency range can effectively be changed by adjusting the width of the dumbbell slot. The designed antenna has been fabricated and measured and its characteristics have been compared with the simulation. It has been found that the fabricated antenna has a reflection coefficient of less than -10dB at 0.904-0.921GHz, 2.5dBic maximum gain, 1.9dB minimum axial ratio, 3dB axial-ratio beamwidth of 87°, and 5dB axial-ratio beamwidth of 124° at 0.909GHz.
