Many countries have mandated use of a mask in public during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is still unclear what is the best way to wear the mask and how to wear to have self-protection against COVID-19. Here, we demonstrate Schlieren experiments to visualize the breathing air, which could be possibly related to the transmission of microdroplets and aerosols in the air. We conducted experiments comparing various types of commonly used masks and face-shields, as well as experiments observing the effect of masks during regular breathing, speaking, and coughing. We also observed and compared the breathing air motion depending on a different style of the mask wearing.
