Design data, information, and knowledge have complex associations with each other. Systems related with the management of the data, information, and knowledge are various, and the representations are numerous. Therefore it is difficult to construct a knowledge based design system with a full association knowledge for supporting the design tasks. In this research, OWL based ontology model for an excavator design is developed for the representation of the relationships. Also an ontology model is used to develop the knowledge based excavator design system.

A knowledge-based system with CAD is widely used to implement a designer"s know-how and a routine calculation within a system. An engineer needs to change several design parameters in an early design stage. However it is not easy to change the design parameters when it needs to update an existing model and data. In this paper, a module has been proposed to make it easy to change the design parameter so that the engineer can easily update and change the design model. Also a flexible interface of the module can easily add or extract the design knowledge.

A design needs various experience and design knowledge through a whole design process. Despite of all efforts and time, it is not easy to introduce a product that meets all customer's needs and expectation in time. To achieve the product goal, designers need a set of sequential process to find appropriate design parameters and ensure customers' needs and requirements. In this research we propose a design methodology for the initial design of an excavator front group with existing QFD(Quality Function Deployment) and Axiomatic Design to satisfy customer's requirements. It turns out that the proposed methodology can support designers more effectively, objectively, and systematically.
