Simplified mathematical formulas are presented to predict deformations during the plate forming process when the heating parameters are given. To obtain the formulas, firstly, the thermal analysis for steel plate is performed, and the thermo-mechanical analysis is followed with actual heating conditions. The analyses have been carried out by the commercial software MARC, which is programmed based on the FEM. Secondary, the results of the mechanical analysis are synthesized with their variables for a statistical approach, which results in simplified formulas. The results of the analysis are well compared with those of experimental measurements.

Arc blow being occurred by Electro-Magnetic force(EMF) during the electric arc welding prevents the formation of a sound weldment. In this study, the effects of arc position, groove size, tack weld and base plate on the EMF in a butt-joint welding of mild steel plate are analyzed by a computer simulation based on the finite element method. The EMF can be numerically identified to be caused by a difference of the magnetic flux-density between ahead of and behind the arc in case that the workpiece locates asymmetrically around the uc. When there exists an air gap of groove ahead of the arc in the welding direction, the similar magnetic force has been producted regardless of the arc position and the gap size. The tack weld alleviates the magnetic force to about one fourth at the finish end of the workpiece. The magnetic force can be also significantly reduced with the base plate to about one fifth at the start end of the workpiece containing a tack weld.

Recently, the electro-magnetic induction process has been utilizing to substitute the flame heating process in shipyard. However, few studies have been performed to exactly analyze the deformation mechanism of the heating process with mathematical model. This is mainly due to the difficulty of modeling the inductor travelling on plate during the process. In this study, heat flux distribution of the process is firstly numerically analysed with the assumption that the process has a quasi-stationary state and also with the consideration that the heat source itself highly depends on the temperature of base plate. With the heat flux, the thermal and deformation analyses are then performed with a commercial program for 34 combinations of heating parameters. The deformations obtained and heating parameters are synthesized with a statistical method to produce simplified formulas, which easily give the relation between the heating parameters and deformations. The formulas are well compared with results of experiment.

An electromagnetic inductive sensor consisted of one exciter and three separated (triple) detectors has been developed for both tracking the weld seam of a workpiece and controlling the sensor-to-workpiece distance (height) simultaneously. The left and right detectors are used to track the seam, while the fore and the other two detectors allow the sensor to determine the height and the gap width by being coupled their outputs together. A series of experiments with the proposed sensor located above a mild steel plate containing a weld seam of gap are carried out to examine the feasibility of the sensor. The results revealed that the proposed sensor could fairly well track the desired seam and also well control the height to be constant even when the gap width of the seam varied. The gap width can be also determined during the seam tracking by using the sensor outputs. As a consequence, these can provide the developed sensor with substantial improvement for industrial uses with respect to the previous electromagnetic sensors being used for the weld seam tracking.

The intrinsic simplicity, ruggedness, and simple power electronic drive requirement of a Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) make it possible to use in many commercial adjustable speed application. The simple magnetic circuit results in a high efficiency drive and low temperature rise, and the drive system provides a good drive characteristics. This paper is provides two phase 4/3 SRM that is similar to two phase 6/3 SRM as aspect to magnetic structure. Although 6/3 SRM does not experience any flux reversal as the flux is in the same direction whether phase A or B is excited, but two phase 4/3 SRM experiences a flux reversal in small part of stator yoke. The flux reversal in two phase 4/3 SRM could be relieved by an adjustment of stator yoke structure. The magnetic analysis and design considerations of the two phase 4/3 SRM have been obtained by the finite element method analysis (FEM).

Because of high intensity and easy controllability of the heat source, high frequency induction heating has been concerned and studied for the steel forming process in the ship building industry. However, the heating and forming characteristics have to be further properly modelled and analyzed for the process to be utilized with its optimal working parameters. In this study, a modelling with thermo-elasto-plastic analysis is performed using the FEM to study heat flow and deformation of the steel plate during the forming process with the electro-magnetic induction heating. The numerical model is then used to study the effect of the inductor shape on the magnitude of angular deformation of the plate during the forming process. It is revealed that the square shape of inductor induces the largest deformation among the rectangular inductors.
