Lean combustion is one of the most promising method for increasing the engine efficiency and reducing the emission from SI gas engines. Due to the possibility of partial bum and misfire under lean operation, stable flame kernel formation and fast burn rate are needed to guarantee a successful subsequent combustion. Experimental data were obtained on a 4-stroke, natural gas fueled SI engine to investigate the effect of EGR rate and various high energy ignition systems on effeiciency and emissioa It has been found that there is an optimum EGR rate which gives very low NOx emission with slight decrease in efficiency and increase in UHC. Breakdown and long spark duration ignition system have been brought about the improvements in effeciency and its operational stablity under lean operating conditions. Experimental results have also displayed that the prechamber type flame-jet ingnition system extended noticeably the lean operation limit with some sacrifice in thermal efficiency due to throttling and heat losses.
Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automotive vehicles, because it can reduce exhaust emissions than gasoline and diesel fuels, and can be used in conventional engines with a little modification. However, natural gas varies in composition between the originating fields and may be further modified due to processing prior to transmission. These variations are known to affect engine performance and emissions through changes in fuel metering characteristics and knock resistance of the fuel.
The objective of this study is to examine the effect of natural gas composition on vehicle performance such as fuel economy, driveability and exhaust emissions. Analysis are made of using 6 types of natural gas fuels, which are selected in consideration of the variation in fuel composition on the worldwide market. These results may be utilized to develop natural gas engine and/or to establish the fuel standard in refuelling station.
Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automotive vehicles. However, natural gas varies in composition between the originating fields and may be further modified due to processing and additional mixing. These variations are known to affect engine performance and emissions through changes in fuel metering and combustion characteristics.
In the present study, it was examine the effect of gas compositions on vehicle performance such as fuel economy, driveability and exhaust emissions. Analysis are made of using 3 types of NGVs which was made by auto maker and 6 different fuels which are selected in consideration of the variation in fuel composition on the worldwide market. These results may be utilized to develop natural gas engine in auto maker and/or to establish the fuel standard in the refuelling station.
