Acidic soil significantly reduces crop productivity mainly due to aluminum (Al) toxicity. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) roots were exposed to aluminum stress (Al<sub>3</sub><sup>+</sup>) in calcium chloride (CaCl<sub>2</sub>) solution (pH4.5) and root growth, physiological and antioxidant enzyme responses were investigated. The root growth (length) was significantly inhibited after 48 h of aluminum stress imposition. Histochemical staining with hematoxylin indicated significant accumulation of aluminum in Al stress-treated root tissues. Histochemical assay were also performed to detect superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation, which were found to be more in root tissues treated with higher aluminum concentrations. The enzymatic activity of CAT, POD and GR in root tissues was slightly increased after Al stress treatment. The result suggests that Al stress alters root growth in alfalfa and induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and demonstrates that antioxidant enzymes involved in detoxification of Al-mediated oxidative stress.

An 8-year old intact female poodle was presented to clinics due to abdominal distension, anorexia, and labored breath associated with pleural effusion. Intra-operative findings revealed multiple neoplasm of the greater omentum, involving anterolateral abdominal wall, sterna surface in the pleural cavity and diaphragm. These masses were 0.1∼0.5 cm in diameter and extended to ovaries, pancreas, and serosal surface of stomach. Microscopically, most neoplastic cells had oval nuclei with prominent nucleoli and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. In deeper area, neoplastic acinus or glandular structures showed invaginated growth resembling adenocarcinoma. High mitotic figures were observed. By immunohistochemistry, the neoplastic cells were strong positive both cytokeratin and vimentin. The present case described for malignant mesothelioma in a dog. Our findings might be helpful for diagnosis and information and helped the clinics choose the treatment including chemotherapy such as cisplatin.
유사성과 인접성을 이용한 연결주의적 의미망에서의 설명 메카니즘

기존의 기호주의적 인공지능 시스템이 추론을 하는데 있어서 유연성이 부족하다는 것은 잘 알려진 사실이다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 신경망을 이용한 추론시스템들이 제안되었다. 그러나 이러한 시스템들은 추론한 결과를 설명하는 기능이 없다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 유연한 지식 표현과 추론을 위한 연결주의적 모텔로 이미 제안된 연결주의적 의미망 즉, CSN(Connectionist Semantic Network)을 기반으로 하여 추론결과를 설명할 수 있는 설명 알고리즘(justification algorithm)을 제안한다. 이 설명 알고리즘은 추론에 중요하게 영향을 미친 개념들을 설명하고, 개념들 사이의 유사도와 인접도를 계산함으로써 유사성과 인접성에 의한 추론을 설명할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 실험을 통하여 제안된 설명 알고리즘의 수행과정을 보이고 타당성을 검토한다. We have recently proposed the Connectionist Semantic Network(CSN) as a model for flexible knowledge representation and inference based on neural networks. However, it is the case that netural networks lack transparency in knowledge representation adn reasoning, which causes difficulties in understanding and explaining reasoning process. In this paper, we preopose a justification algorithm for CSN using conceptual similarity adn contiguity. Our method, first, extracts important concepts relevant to the inference results and then computes similarity and contiguity among those concepts, from which a justificatio can be constructed. Simulation results show that our method is sufficiently powerful and flexible in justifying connectionist inference.
