When evaluating the mechanical properties of a metallic material, the behavior of the material according to the change in the shape of the specimen is usually affected by the analysis of the stress field distribution through numerical analysis, checking the similarity with the actual test, and reviewing the results. As one of the material property evaluation tests, the small punch (SP) test, which has recently received attention, has an elastic-plastic bending deformation by applying a compressive load to the specimen and then reaches the final fracture; The stress distribution and displacement at characterization-related points, that are difficult to obtain directly due to the geometric feature of the SP test, are calculated through numerical analysis. Actually, through numerical analysis, the load-displacement curve of STS316L steel was simulated during the SP test, and the elongation calculated at the fracture point could be compared with the experimental result. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis was performed to simulate the deformation and fracture behavior of the notched specimen using the SP test. The S/W used is ANSYS Workbench 2020 R2 version. In the specimen of 10×10×t0.7mm, the notch was U-shaped, the notch depth was 0.2 mm, and the notch radius was 0.15 mm. Since the notch portion is usually subjected to triaxial stress state, a three-dimensional analysis was performed. The specimen was made of STS316L steel. At this time, the coefficient of friction between the steel ball and the specimen was 0.2 and the punch velocity was 1.0 mm/min, and the stress distribution was continuously calculated until the displacement reached 2.5 mm. In addition, in order to calculate the stress concentration factor applied to the notch, the analysis was performed in the region corresponding to the elastic deformation during the test at 0.1 mm/min of punch velocity. It can be seen that when plastic deformation occurs at the notch tip, it showed and the notch becomes dull. In addition, the stress distribution around the notched part of the specimen and the load-displacement curve were compared depending on with/without the notch.

Recently, as hydrogen energy is used as new energy sources such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen stations, to ensure the safety must be considered in the design of facilities for production/storage/transportation of hydrogen gas. Hydrogen atoms are small in size, so they penetrate into metals in high-pressure environments and cause embrittlement damage, eventually reducing mechanical properties. In the case of structure design with a notch, it may be vulnerable to the failure due to stress concentration. Therefore, it is also important to study how the notch affect the failure mechanism the high-pressure hydrogen environments. In this study, a U-shaped notch was introduced into the STS316L steel specimen and the effect of the notch on hydrogen embrittlement was investigated using the small punch test method (SP test) in high-pressure hydrogen environments at RT and -40℃.
