고려불교는 원 간섭기에 티베트불교의 영향으로 승려의 결혼과 육식이 용인되는 비계율적인 양상을 보이게 된다. 이 시기 지공은 元 晉宗의 御香使 신분으로 고려를 방문한다. 지공의 無生戒와 印度禪을 통한 교화는 청정한 분위기로 쇄신되면서 혼탁한 고려불교에 충격을 준다. 이는나옹을 중심으로 한 고려의 선승들이, 지공이 원의 대도로 귀국한 후에도 지공을 찾는 계기가 된다. 나옹은 지공의 治命제자 즉 수제자인데, 이는 나옹이 공민왕 말년에 고려불교를 주도하는 위치에 오르는 한 중요한 계기로 작용한다. 물론 여기에는 나옹의 탁월했던 능력도 존재한다. 그러나 지공의 추모열기라는 상황도 나옹이 발탁되는데, 한 중요한 영향을 준 것은 틀림없다. 이는 지공의 영향이 고려불교에 얼마나 깊숙이 각인되어 있었는지를 판단해 보게 한다. 지공은 여말선초 불교계의 흐름을 바꿔놓은 중요한 인물이다. 이런 점에서 지공에 대한 구체적인 검토는 한국불교의 이해를 위해서 필연적이다. 본고는 ① 원간섭기 티베트불교의 영향으로 인한 고려 시대의 혼탁한 양상, ② 지공의 戒律 受戒를 통한 교화와 고려에 끼친 영향, ③ 달마의 비견과 인도선을 통한 교화적 측면, ④ 지공과의 연관성 및 나옹의 사법계승, ⑤ 지공의 위상에 힘입어 고려 말 실질적인 1인자로 등극한 나옹에 대해 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 이를 통해 지공이 고려불교에 끼친 영향과 그의 유전에 대해 보다 분명하게 이해할 수 있다. Buddhism in Goryeo Dynast during the period of the Yuan intervention was influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, resulting in anti- sila-vinaya precepts in which monks’ marriage and eating meat were allowed. During this period, Jigong(指空 Śūnyâdiśya, 1300-1361) visited Goryeo as King Temür Jìnzōng (晉宗)’s messenger who lit incense to Buddha on behalf of the king. The enlightenment through Jigong’s Musaenggye(無生戒) and Indian Zen(印度禪) was transformed into a clean atmosphere, shocking the murky Goryeo Buddhism. With this as a momentum for Goryeo’s Zen monks, starting with Naong(懶翁), to look for Jigong after he returned to the capital of Yuan. Naong was the best disciple of Jigong, and this made him lead Goryeo Buddhism in the late years of King Gongmin. Of course, there was a reason that Naong had an outstanding ability. However, Naong was selected under the situation of enthusiastic memorial service for Jigong, which must had been an important impact. This allows us to determine how deeply Jigong’s influence was imprinted on Goryeo Buddhism. Jigong is an important figure in changing the flow of Buddhism in Late Goryeo Dynasty and Early Choson Dynasty. In this regard, a detailed review on Jigong is inevitable for the understanding of Korean Buddhism. This paper examines ① the murky aspects of the Goryeo Buddhism due to the influence of Tibetan Buddhism during the period of the Yuan intervention, ② the enlightenment by Jigong’s sila-vinaya, and its influence on Goryeo Buddhism, ③ the educational perspective through the comparison with Dharma and Indian Zen, ④ the connection between Jigong and Naong, and ⑤ Naong, who became the nominal head at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty thanks to the status of Jigong. This provides a clearer understanding of the Jigong’s influence on Goryeo Buddhism and his inheritance.

지공(指空)의 가계(家系) 주장에서 살펴지는 특징과 문제점

指空禪賢은 인도 출신의 승려로 여말선초에 많은 영향을 끼치며, 오늘날의 불교의식문에도 뚜렷한 흔적을 남길 정도로 한국불교에서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 하지만, 지공에 대해 남아있는 자료가 많지 않고, 개인에 대한 자료로 한정되어 있어 이를 객관화하여 기록을 파악하기에는 어려움이 따른다. 지공은 父系로 붓다와 연결되고, 母系로 달마와 관련된다는 家系주장을 펼치고 있고, 그의 혈연관계는 불교적인 신성성에 힘입어 동아시아 선불교 문화권에 가장 적합화된 모습으로 나타나고 있다. 하지만 이는 지공에게 너무 유리한 측면으로 보인다는 점에서 의구심을 자아내게 한다. 실제로 오늘날 불교의 관점에서나 지리적인 여건, 혹은 역사적인 측면에서 살펴봤을 때 지공의 가계문제는 사실일 가능성이 낮다. 지공은 계율을 강조하는 대표 승려이고, 나옹혜근·백운경한·무학자초·축원지천에게도 영향을 끼치며 한국 조계종의 시원을 형성한 영향력 있는 인물이라는 점에서 지공 자신의 가계를 거짓으로 꾸며냈을 거라고 판단하지는 않는다. 그렇지만 사실의 일부가 왜곡되어 확대되었을 가능성이 존재하고, 그 왜곡에는 숨은 의도가 있다고 생각된다. 현재의 시점에서 지공이 주장하는 가계의 모습이 원래 어떤 모습이었는지를 판단할 수는 없다. 그렇지만 지금까지 진행된 지공의 연구성과들을 살펴볼 때, 반박할 수 있는 자료가 없다고 해서 의문을 품지 않고 받아들여지는 자세는 지양되어야 한다. 본고는 이와 같은 측면에서 지공의 가계 문제를 새로운 관점에서 다시 살펴보고자 한 것이다. Jigong(指空) was a Buddhist monk from India and influenced on Late Koryo Dynasty and Early Choson Dynasty. He left clear traces on today’s Buddhist inscription and has an important position in Korean Buddhism. However, there is not much data left about Jigong(指空) and the data is too limited to objectify; thus, it is difficult to understand fully the document. Jigong asserted that his family linage connected with Buddha in fatherhood and with Dharma in motherhood. With Buddhist divinity of his family lineage, his assertions are optimized to the Zen Buddhism culture(禪佛敎文化) of East Asia, we may think of its East-Asian modification. However, this raises doubts in that it appears to be too advantageous for Jigong. Actually, Jigong’s family lineage has a low probability when checked in respect of present Buddhist perspective and geographical / historical knowledge. Jigong was the supreme monk who emphasized vinaya(戒律) and was an influential figure who formed the origin of Korean Jogye Order influencing disciples such as Naong Hyegeun(懶翁惠勤), Baegwun Gyeonghan(白雲景閑), Muhag Jacho(無學自超) and Chugwon Jicheon(竺源智泉). In this respect, it is not probable that Jigong forged out his family lineage. However, surely there is some distortion like expanding a small thing into a big, and the distortion had a kind of hidden intention. In current situation, it is unable to find out what the original form of Jigong’s family lineage was. However, when considered precedent studies on Jigong, even though there is a lack of data to dispute, it is important to have a question. In this respect, this study aims to have a new perspective on the issues about Jigong’s family lineage.
