Direct laser melting(DLM) technology is widely used in micro processing. The technology is influenced by process parameters as laser power, scan rate and layering height. In this study, characterization of DLM technology for the bipolar plate of fuel cell was analyzed. The bipolar plate is fabricated using DLM technology with SS 316L(stainless steel) plate and powder. In equal energy density, line height is decreased from the laser power increasing. The equation of line height is predicted trough comprehended tendency of powder behavior. It is confirmed that line thickness is constant by more than certain energy density. These changes of line height and thickness are helpfully available to refer when manufacturing bipolar plate of fuel cell.

Direct laser melting technologies have been used to restore the damaged mold surface. The objective of this research work is to investigate hardness and wear-resistance of the restored mold steels. A detailed wearresistance analysis using a Pin-on-Disk (POD) testing machine compares the wear rate and the friction coefficient for various test specimens, such as the as-received AISI H13 steel, the direct melted surface without powder, the direct melted surface with Fe-Cr powder and Fe-Ni powder. Experimental results show that the micro-hardness of the melted layer is approximately 2.3 times higher than the measured hardness of the as-received specimen. The melted layer of metal powder shows the frictional reduction effect more than 10%. The wear resistance of melted layer is about 2.3 times higher than that of as-received specimen.

In this study, the casting process using forged insert was investigated to characterize the munufacturing process by which good mechanical properties can be obtained when compared with existing casting products. Process analysis for the casting design was performed by using FVM(Finite Volume Method) software. In filling process, three kinds of candidate gating systems are considered and analyzed respectively. The molten metal behavior in gating system is so important that it affects the solidification behavior of the cast.

Direct laser melting (DLM) technology is applied to fabricate the micro-pattern of bipolar plates in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). For the micro patterning, a DLM process with 316L stainless steel (SS316L) powder has been used. For the target point of I mm melt height, the DLM process conditions are optimized and an 8-layer structure is successfully formed. The performance of a bipolar plate made by the DLM micro patterning is compared with a NC machined bipolar plate. For the DLM micro-patterned bipolar plate, the kinetic energy in the fuel causes a more rapid chemical reaction due to the increased surface area of rough side walls. The smaller fluid rate loss enhances circulation of the fluid, and consequently, the efficiency of the micro-patterned bipolar plate made by the DLM process is significantly improved.
