영화『백야행』영화음악 분석 연구 - 작곡가 석승희의 인터뷰를 통한 요한의 라이트모티프(Leitmotiv) <카페로로>와 <요한>을 중심으로 -

This study analyses <Cafe Roro> and <Johann>, two Leitmotiv music pieces that was composed by Seok Seonghui which are included in the original soundtracks of movie 『Journey Under Midnight Sun(2009)』, by interviewing the composer himself and exploring the way he utilizes the music in the film. Both songs are composed in a form of solo piano music. The composer explained that he has chosen this form, because the unique tone of the instrument is suitable for displaying the emotions of the characters, and it is the best way to deliver the thematic melody with his full intention. Based on the score provided by the composer, analyzing the key, beats, rhythm, harmonies and the compositional patterns of <Cafe Roro> and <Johann> was used as a research method. the purpose of this research is to recognize the composer’s intention of what he wanted to express through music in the movie by observing the source based on the interview with him. As a result, I learned that the main characteristics of the light motif of 'Johann' are the repeated thematic melody and sound pattern. Also, I found out the music has been transformed and developed depending on the use of script or not, or it remained in its original form. This was effective on making the actor’s lines to be standing out without disturbing the flow of the film. In addition, I discovered that this effect can be utilized to support expressing the emotions of the characters in the movie and help the audience to immerse themselves in and to understand the movie. This study had a limitation on the researching process because of the absence of sheet music which led to explore only fractional music from the film and not as a whole. In order to help investigating the compositional technique of Korean film music and applying it in its field, it was suggested that all music in this movie were made into sheet music and a follow-up study was made. 본 연구는 2009년작 영화 백야행 에 삽입된 오리지널 사운드 트랙 중 작곡가 석승희가 작곡한 라이트모티프(Leitmotiv) 두 곡 <카페로로>와 <요한>을 작곡가의 인터뷰를 통해 분석하고 영화에서 음악의 활용을 조사하였다. 이 두 곡은 피아노 독주곡의 형태로 작곡되었으며, 작곡가는 악기가 가진 고유의 음색이 등장인물의 감정 표현에 적합하고 작곡가가 의도한 주제 선율을 가장 잘 전달할 수 있다고 설명하였다. 영화음악 제작 시 일반적으로 작곡가는 음악의 강렬한 인상을 남기기 위해서 다채로운 사운드를 만들기에 용이한 대규모의 악기 편성이나 음량이 다소 큰 악기 사용을 선호한다. 하지만 <카페로로>와 <요한>은 다양한 악기 편성을 배제하고 피아노 독주곡으로 만들어졌으며, 이렇게 흔하지 않은 악기 편성과 작곡 기법은 개별 연구가 필요하였다. 연구방법으로 작곡가가 제공한 악보를 토대로 <카페로로>와 <요한>의 조성, 박자, 리듬, 화성, 패턴을 분석하였으며, 작곡가를 인터뷰한 내용을 토대로 이 영화에서 그의 음악이 영화 속에서 표현하는 바를 연구하였다. 이를 통해 영화음악 제작에 다양한 기법이 활용될 수 있음을 제시하고, 이러한 예시가 앞으로의 한국 영화음악 작곡 양식의 발전에 도움이 되는 데에 목적이 있었다. 그 결과로‘요한’의 라이트모티프의 주요 특징은 반복되는 주제선율과 음형이며, 이는 대사의 유무에 따라 변형되어 발전되거나 원래의 형태로 머물러 있었다는 것을 알게 되었다. 이는 음악이 배우의 대사가 있는 장면에서 영화의 흐름을 방해하지 않고 대사를 돋보이게 하는 효과를 주었고 영화 속에서 인물의 감정을 보조해주고 관객들이 영화에 몰입하고 이해하도록 도와주는 의미가 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 영화의 오리지널 사운드 트랙의 악보 부재로 영화 전체의 음악을 연구하지 못하는 한계점을 가지고 있었으나 이 영화의 모든 곡이 악보화 되어 후속 연구가 이루어진다면 한국 영화음악 작곡 양식의 파악과 작곡의 실제에 보탬이 된다는 제언을 하였다.
