아트 슈피겔만의 『쥐』에 나타난 공감과 치유 그리고 재현의 한계성

        목현정(Hyonjeong Mok) 한국동서비교문학학회 2017 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.0 No.40

Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” is a work that brings to mind the suffering of the other and the ethics of the human being, which shows clearly the different lives of the survivors after the war and those who watch and reproduce the life of the survivors. Artie tries to understand his father (Bladeck) who is trapped in trauma. But the impossibility of understanding reveals an emotion of “shame” of its realistic appearance. He realistically tries to reproduce his father’s experience. However, he experiences limitations of representation. Bladeck has a memory of silence that he does not want to testify. Artie tries to open up to the reader the possibility of how the history of ruin that his father experienced can be saved, not just becoming “shame”. Although he has become mentally deranged because of his father’s past memory, he has the time to grow up to understand his father and heal himself for eight years devoting to the completion of his work. He talks about the “whole human” history beyond the story of the “Bladeck as an individual” who has experienced the war observing the Holocaust event with readers where the dignity of man had fallen in the chronological order. This story is not the past that was left as a wound, but an effort to make the scars of past generations who experienced the Holocaust, into “image” and to embrace them with sharing and sympathy in a broad sense. It is also a message of effort to reconstruct the values of humanity.

『한밤중에 개에게 일어난 의문의 사건』에 나타난 성장의 진실

        목현정(Hyonjeong Mok) 한국동서비교문학학회 2015 동서 비교문학저널 Vol.0 No.34

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon is a story of a young boy named Christopher who has Asperger’s Syndrome. From the beginning, he investigates the death of a neighbour’s dog, and he writes a detective work about this investigation, with the encouragement of Siobhan. He explores the world in his own way with the question “Who killed the dog?”. He tries to solve the mystery of the murder of the dog. But his writing takes us in some unexpected directions. The clues and answers about the dog’s murder are eventually concluded in his life. The truth of the growth behind his detective work is revealed by Christopher himself. He can’t communicate with people and he is an outsider of the world. Christopher has a special gift in mathematics and likes to find prime numbers. As people have uncertain future and cannot find the rules of prime numbers, unexpectedly he learns more about himself. His story is revealed through prime numbers. He is like the number ‘1’, and the situations which he finds himself in are like the other prime numbers. Just like the prime number ‘1’, he is the only one outside of these situations being able to ‘divide’, or see into the situation clearly. He finally finds 2 to 233 of the prime numbers in his own story. He also passed the A level test. His tough journey from Swindon to London is for him a terrifying leap into the world. Through his writing and narration we can see Christopher’s coming-of-age. The teenage protagonist becomes independent and finds his way to be in the world. The adult readers also become to ask how you know about yourself, what you can do and what is the truth and falsehood we believe in. Through this paper, I hope we can have an open mind towards specialized students and teenagers we will meet as a teacher or an adult.
