Most cracks in sheet glasses originate in edges and are a major cause of decreasing strength. Glass covers are being adopted in moremobile devices, especially smart phones, and are required to enhance reliability. In this study, micro-cracks in the chamfered edgeof soda-lime cover glasses were eliminated by chemical polishing process with several etchants, and their mechanical properties andtransmittance were measured. After ammonium fluoride and organic acid solution treatment, the transmittance of glass was notdegraded and the strength was increased up to 20%. However, in the case of HF-based solutions, the strength of soda lime glassesincreased but its transmittance decreased.
실험계획법에 의한 GMP용 비구면 광학유리의 성질에 미치는 조성의 효과 연구

In this study, the composition of optical glass for GMP(glass molding process) was designed with 'Design of Experiments' method. All the composition batch was performed by 'Create Factorial Design' method. Particularly, $SiO_2$, BaO and $Al_2O_3$ were chosen major parameters for investigating the effects of components on optical and thermal properties. BaO and $Al_2O_3$ strongly influenced on optical and thermal properties, respectively. Finally, the approximate values of desired optical and thermal values were obtained by microtuning of compositions. At the composition of $BaO:Al_2O_3:SiO_2$=10:4:48 (molar ratio), refractive index($n_d$) was 1.5833, coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) was $104{\times}10^{-7}/^{\circ}C$.

The quartz glasses were prepared by fumed silica powders sintering method at $1210^{\circ}C$, $1230^{\circ}C$, $1250^{\circ}C$ in air and the effect of sintering temperature on their properties were investigated. The X-ray diffraction pattern, the OH concentration, the light transmittance, the apparent porosity and the density were analyzed. The transparent quartz glass were obtained above $1230^{\circ}C$. The OH-group and macroscopic pores were removed above $1230^{\circ}C$ and highest density and light transmittance were obtained at $1250^{\circ}C$.

In this study, we measured the thermally and chemically induced residual stresses on glaze using the photoelastic method. Porcelain with thermally induced residual stress showed compressive stress of 49 MPa for thermal expansion mismatch and a locally fluctuated stress field over the glaze layer due to compensation of compressive stresses around pores. In the case of chemically strengthened porcelain, the compressive stress on the glaze was 151 MPa which was around 3 times higher than the stress on thermally strengthened glaze. The trend of fracture strength of thermally and chemically strengthened porcelains was coincident with that of the residual stress of porcelains.
