번역 과정에서 수준별 학습자들의 사전 및 자료 활용

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2022 통번역교육연구 Vol.20 No.2

Translation is considered as an important process in English classes. Students use different types of dictionaries and other materials such as Internet. This study investigated how students use dictionaries and other materials during translation and their preference on certain materials. Also it examined whether there is a difference between advanced students and low to intermediate students in terms of using the dictionary and other materials. A total of 63 students participated in the study: (1) low to intermediate level group and (2) advanced level group. Results showed that despite their English proficiency, both groups frequently used online dictionaries; however, the advanced group searched the background information online in addition to looking up the words in the dictionary. On contrast, the low to intermediate group heavily relied on the use of online dictionaries, but they also showed a lack of background knowledge and an effort to search more information to translate the text properly.

번역문과 영작문에서 직접 피드백과 간접 피드백이 수준별 학습자에게 미치는 영향

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2023 통번역교육연구 Vol.21 No.3

This study examined the effects of direct and indirect feedback on college English classes at different levels of English proficiency. A total of 120 students participated in the study: (1) indirect feedback group (low to intermediate level), (2) direct feedback group (low to intermediate level), (3) indirect feedback group (advanced level), (4) direct feedback group (advanced level). Results proved that both direct and indirect feedback improved students’ writing and translation work after receiving feedback, but direct feedback was more effective for students to make proper revisions on their works. It was also revealed that direct feedback was effective in boosting students’ motivation in English writing and translation. These findings provide valuable insights for educators, enabling them to refine their feedback strategies and create a more engaging and effective learning environment for their students.

A Study of Think-aloud Strategy with Feedback on Reading Comprehension for Low-achieving College EFL Readers

        마선미,어도선 한국외국어대학교 외국어교육연구소 2019 외국어교육연구 Vol.33 No.3

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effects of think-aloud strategy with feedback on low-achieving readers in college reading classrooms. Thirty three participants out of 124 students from the four groups were selected as low-achieving readers based on their reading comprehension scores. They were assigned with four groups: a control group, a think-aloud group with no feedback, a think-aloud group with implicit feedback, and a think-aloud group with explicit feedback. For implicit feedback, students’ think-aloud comments were indirectly corrected with specific codes while explicit feedback group received overt correction feedback. After one semester of research with 10 reading articles, low-achieving readers improved their overall scores on the reading comprehension post-test from the use of think-aloud with feedback. However, the overt, direct feedback group performed better than other groups. Although all feedback groups produced less wrong think-aloud statements, the explicit feedback group generated the least number of wrong think-aloud statements. The study sheds some light on the importance of explicit feedback in EFL classes.

Genetic structure and population differentiation of endangered Scrophularia takesimensis (Scrophulariaceae) in Ulleung Island, Korea

        마선미,신현철,임용석,이준 한국식물분류학회 2011 식물 분류학회지 Vol.41 No.3

As a part of the on-going effort to conserve endangered Scrophularia takesimensis Nakai in Korea, its genetic structure and diversity from 3 population, consisted of 14 subpopulations in Ulleung Island were analyzed using RAPD band patterns. Out of 60 primers tested, 33 generated amplified bands with its genome, including 149 polymorphic and 67 monomorphic bands. The highest number (146) was found in northern population, especially, 64 in HY subpopulation; the smallest (40) in eastern population. An examination of its genetic structure with AMOVA revealed that about 60% of all variations could be assigned to among subpopulations within populations. Population differentiation among populations and subpopulations is seriously going now because of habitat fragmentation due to human activities, such as road and small port construction. Although the habitats of S. takesimensis in Ulleung Island, Korea are disappeared at an alarming rate, significant levels of genetic variation still exist at species level, and population level, especially northern population. Therefore, three conservation strategies should be needed urgently; 1) preservation of populations as it stands, 2) establishment of recovery plan to connect population and subpopulations genetically, and 3) long-term monitoring.

영어 독해 시험에서 문제와 선택지 미리보기가 끼치는 영향

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2022 통번역교육연구 Vol.20 No.1

Reading is a complex process and it often requires students to use a variety of strategies. A Study of Reading with a Translation Activity on the English Composition

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2019 통번역교육연구 Vol.17 No.2

Previous studies on reading-writing connections have noted correlations between them. In an attempt to explore the relationship between reading and writing in the EFL context, 52 students were assigned into 2 groups, No Reading and Reading. To identify the role of translation, 2 groups were also assigned, No Translation and Translation. The data showed that there was no significant difference on essay scores between No Reading group and Reading group except the content section. However, with a translation activity, it was clearly shown that there were significant differences on the essay scores between No Translation group and Translation group. Students with translation showed better overall writing scores, especially in content, vocabulary, and organization sections. The study concluded that English essays will be better if a proper reading activity such as translation is used.

The Effects of Graphic Organizers Translated in Korean as a Post-reading Strategy in College EFL Reading Classes

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2017 통번역교육연구 Vol.15 No.2

This study investigated the effects of graphic organizers translated in Korean on the reading comprehension and recall test of 50 Korean undergraduate EFL students. Korean graphic organizer group received a graphic organizer instruction translated in Korean as a post-reading activity while English graphic organizer group received a graphic organizer instruction in English of the same reading text. After that, all subjects read a passage, and immediately after reading the passage, subjects answered 14-item multiple choice questions, and a week later, a recall test was given. The three experiments were done for three weeks, and the tests revealed positive effects for graphic organizers translated in Korean in recall process, even though there was no significant difference on the multiple choice comprehension questions; however, students in Korean graphic organizer group showed significant differences on the certain type of questions such as implicit questions.

Multiculturalism and Translation in the Caldecott Awards

        마선미 한국통번역교육학회 2019 통번역교육연구 Vol.17 No.4

Picture books have an impact on children’s life and their growth. Since the Caldecott award is one of the most prestigious awards in the picture books, it is noteworthy to investigate the contents of the winners in the multicultural perspective. This study examined the multiculturalism in the Caldecott winners that have been made into films. Those books show male-dominated societies while females serve a minor passive role, and in terms of races, whites dominate the main characters. This should be changed in accordance with different aspects of the society. Also the translated versions of English picture books still have the prejudice of the society by using culturally appropriate suffixes and words. This study suggests that translation should be carefully done even in children’s books to reflect the societies we live in, and the roles and responsibilities of translators are highly emphasized.
