멀티미디어 데이타는 임의의 크기를 가지며, 대용량이라는 특성을 갖기 때문에 정형 데이타(formatted data)의 처리에 맞게 구현된 기존 관계 DBMS에서는 지원이 매우 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 데이타의 처리를 지원하기 위해 국내 기술로 개발된 '바다' 관계 DBMS를 확장 구현하였으며 확장 내용은 크게 두 부분으로 나뉘어 진다. 첫째는 멀티미디어 데이타 처리를 위한 데이타베이스 언어의 확장과 이를 지원하기 위한 언어 치리기의 확장 구현 부분이다. 이때 고려한 주요 사항으로는 멀티미디어 데이타 전체를 단순히 순차적으로 검색, 저장하기보다는 데이타 내 임의의 위치에서 검색, 삽입, 삭제 및 갱신 할 수 있는 다양한 연산을 지원하도록 한 것과 SQL 구문 자체의 수정을 최소화 함으로써 기존에 운용되던 응용 프로그램과의 호환성을 유지하도록 노력하였다는 점이 큰 특징이라 할 수 있다. 두 번째는 멀티미디어 데이타 저장을 위하여 LOB(unstructured Large OBject)을 수용하도록 저장 시스템을 확장한 부분이다. 특히 기존 시스템의 주요 지원 기능에 영향을 미치지 않으면서 LOB 데이타를 지원하기 위해 대용량 데이타 저장 구조를 지원하는 LOB 관리자 구조를 새롭게 추가 구현하였다. It is difficult to support multimedia data handling capability in conventional relational DBMSs because multimedia data requires variable and very large size. In this paper, we present the extended version of 'BADA' DBMS for handling multimedia data management. In the first place, we address the extension of the database language for handling multimedia capabilities and the implementation of the language processor to support the multimedia database language. The extended database language supports the various operations such as partial retrieving, inserting, and updating of multimedia data as well as the total retrieving of that. And it has the compatibility with any application program by minimizing the modification of SQL syntax. We also describe the extension of the efficient storage system to support LOB(unstructured Large OBject) data for storing multimedia data. We newly extended the LOB manager to the storage manager of BADA storage system. The LOB manager supports the storage structure for large-volume data, and efficiently handles the LOB data without having on effect on the inherent functionalities of existing storage system.
