함양(涵養)은 주자학(朱子學)의 중요한 수양공부이다. 함양의 구체적인과정은 감지(感知)와 언어 활동을 포함한 일상적 도덕실천 활동이며, 또‘일들 속의 함양[事上涵養]’이라는 말로 표현할 수 있다. 이것이 주자 함양론의 중심이자 특색이다. 함양 공부를 잘 해내면 한편으로는 주경(主敬)의 심리상태를 구현해낼 수 있는데 이 상태를 장기간 동안 안정적으로 유지할 수 있으면 또 성현의 인격적 특징을 성취해낼 수 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 천리(天理)로부터 기원한 내재적인 덕성을 성취할 수 있다. 개체의 도덕생명의 성장과 유학의 사회적 존립에 대해 주자의 함양론은 근본을 바로잡고 근원을 맑게 하는 가치를 가진다. self-cultivation theory is the important part of Zhuzi’s theory.The concrete way of Self.cultivation is the daily moral practice, including perception, language activities, and it can be referred to as Self.cultivation in practice, which is the focus and characteristics of Zhu Xi``s Self.cultivation theory. If self.cultivation’s efforts do s good job, one psychological state of respect which will become the saints personality characteristics can be achieved,; on the other hand, the inherent virtue which come from heaven principles can be achieved. whether it is for the growth of individual moral life or for the maintain the Confucian social existence, Zhuzi’s self.cultivation theory has the fundamental value.

退溪 李滉은 勉齋 黃?의 사상을 가장 중시했던 조선의 성리학자이다. 면재의 사상에 대한 그의 이해와 수용은 주로 『性理大全』에 수록된 면재의 자료를 중심으로 이루어졌는데 중요하게는 다음의 세 가지이다. 첫째, 四端七情 논변에서 면재 사상의 영향을 받아 理氣互發의 관점을 형성한 것이고, 둘째, 無極과 太極의 “極” 자에 대한 면재의 이해가 퇴계 사상을 한 차례 변화시킨 것이고, 셋째, 면재의 음양과 오행의 차례에 대한 학설을 둘러싸고 퇴계가 깊은 논의를 한 것이다. 면재 사상에 대한 퇴계의 이해와 수용을 살펴봄으로써 면재 사상이 한국 성리학 발전에 얼마나 중대한 영향을 미쳤는지 확인할 수 있을 것이다. Yi Hwang(Toegye) is the most important Korean Confucian scholars who has pay attention to Huang Gan(黃?)`s thought. His unique understanding and acceptance on Huang Gan`s thought is largely dependent on Huang Gan`s datas in the “Xinglidaquan(性理大全)”. There are three main aspects. First, because of the influence of Mian Zhai thought, Toegye formed the view of "Liqihufa(理氣互發)" in the discussion on the” Siduan Qiqing(四端七情)”. Second, Because of Huang Gan`s understanding on “Taiji(太極)”, Toegye`s thought has dundergone a change. Third, with regard to Huang Gan`s though on the order of Yin-Yang and five elements(陰陽五行), Toegye has deep discussion. From these unique understanding and acceptance on Huang Gan`s thought, we can see that, on the one hand, Toegye has extensive reading and critical understanding on Huang Gan thought; on the other hand, Huang Gan`s thought has an important influence on the development of Korean Confucian.
