There was much talk about how machine intelligence is going to overtake human intelligence in the next decade. From the most recent reports about new computers on the anvil, human intelligence is not only area being encroached upon by the ubiquitous march of silicon technology. If theses reports are to believed, the most starting progress has come in creating machines that can read human emotion, a challenge similar to having them recognize handwritten words or speech. User-friendly is about to take on a more literal meaning: computer scientists are creating machines that can interact their users most intime moods and respond like an empathetic friend. However, the more conservative view today is that there is no silver bullet for achieving artificial intelligence. We first need to encode an enormous amount of commonsenese knowledge into a computer through a laborious process of hand entering information gleaned from a wide range of sources - such as encyclopedias. With such a primed knowledge pump, a computer might be able to interact with its environment and users. Affective computing is under way, a computer worn around the waist monitors its wearer s every shift of mood.
