본 연구에서는 통일교육 영역이 ‘2007 개정 도덕과 교육과정’의 연구․개발 단계에서 핵심 쟁점 중의 하나로 부각될 수밖에 없었던 이유에 주목하면서, 도덕과 통일교육 영역에서 발생하고 있는 담론의 성격을 분석한 후, 향후 연구 과제를 제시하고자 하였다. 이 과정에서 도덕과 통일교육 영역에서 제기되는 주요 쟁점들을 ‘교육목적’ 차원(‘왜 통일 교육인가’에 대한 성격 연구), ‘교육내용’ 차원(‘통일교육에서 무엇을 가르칠 것인가’에 대한 내용 연구)과 ‘교육방법’ 차원(‘통일교육을 어떻게 가르칠 것인가’에 대한 방법 연구)에서 각각 논의해 보고, 이 틀을 기반으로 도덕과 통일교육의 연구 과제 및 방향성을 제시하였다. 여기서 ‘왜 통일 교육인가’에 대한 연구는 통일교육의 본질과 방향성에 대한 이론적 기초 연구의 성격을 갖는 것으로, 특히 도덕과 통일교육의 핵심 개념인 ‘통일의식’의 성격을 ‘도덕성’과 관련하여 규명하는 차원에서 필요하다고 보았다. 다음으로, ‘통일교육에서 무엇을 가르칠 것인가’에 대한 연구는 기본적으로 도덕과 통일교육의 목적과 정합성을 추구하면서 도덕철학, 도덕심리학, 사회학, 한국학, 통일학, 평화학 등의 배경학문 간 소통을 통해 교육내용을 선정하는 차원에서 필요하다고 보았다. 끝으로, ‘통일교육을 어떻게 가르칠 것인가’에 대한 연구는 도덕심리학적 접근을 중심으로 도덕 사회화와 도덕 발달 간의 관계를 통일교육에서 정립하고, 학생들의 발달 특성에 부합하는 교수․학습방법을 어떻게 구안할 것인가를 밝히는 차원에서 필요하다고 보았다. 한마디로 본 연구의 기본 관심은 ‘도덕과에서 통일교육 영역을 도덕과답게 가르치기 위해서’ 향후 어떤 연구 노력이 필요한가를 밝히는 것이며, 이 물음에 답하기 위해 튜리엘(E. Turiel)의 사회 영역 이론이 제공할 수 있는 시사점이 무엇인가에 대해 주목하고자 하였다. Focusing on the reason why the domain of unification education should have been treated as one of key critical issues in the development process of the revised moral education curriculum in 2007, this article tries to analyse the nature of contemporary discourse on unification education in the elementary and secondary moral education, and then present tasks and directions of further studies in this area. For the purpose, we suggest that several key issues in the field of unification education in moral education can be divided into three parts: (ⅰ) developing educational objectives, (ⅱ) selecting content knowledge, and (ⅲ) developing teaching methods. Based on the framework, this article presented research tasks and directions of unification education in moral education. The present study considers research related to the topic of ""why should unification education be taught in moral education"" as foundation level studies with respect to the essence and directions of unification education in moral education. Especially, we think that these kinds of research are needed for the integration between 'unification consciousness' as the key concept in unification education and 'morality' as the key concept of moral education. Also, we believe that studies relevant to the topic of ""what should we teach in unification education in moral education are needed to select content knowledge through the interdisciplinary communications including moral philosophy, moral psychology, sociology, Koreanology, unification studies, peace studies, under consideration of purpose and coherence of unification education. Lastly, we think that studies relevant to the topic of ""how can we teach unification education in moral education"" are need for the development of teaching methods in accordance with students' psychological levels and for the establishment of the proper relationship between moral development and moral socialization for unification education in moral education.
