Smartphone-based O2 Deficiency Monitoring Device
노병국,Loh, Byoung Gook The Korean Society of Safety 2015 한국안전학회지 Vol.30 No.6
$O_2$-deficiency related accidents occur every year and the most effective way to prevent them is to measure $O_2$ concentration in air with a properly-calibrated $O_2$ monitoring device before entering low-$O_2$ areas. An electro-chemical sensor, Texas Instrument gas platform, and iPhone are used to construct a smartphone-based $O_2$ monitoring device. The smartphone based $O_2$ measuring approach offers advantages of small size, accessibility, internet-connectivity, and programmability in comparison to conventional $O_2$ measuring devices. Multiple gas sensors can be conveniently interfaced to single smartphone, allowing for creating a network of gas sensors distributed across workplaces and remote monitoring via existing mobile communication network. To check proper function of the $O_2$ monitoring device the sensor was exposed to shallow and deep human breaths. The readings decreased immediately after being exposed to exhalation and recovered during inhalation to a calibrated level of 20.9%. When readings decreased below a preset warning value of 19.5%, a low $O_2$ warning was successfully activated on the smartphone.

Economic burden of work-related musculoskeletal disorder(WMDs) is increasing. Known causes of WMDs include improper posture, repetition, load, and temperature of workplace. Among them, improper postures play an important role. A smart sensor called SensorTag is employed to estimate the trunk postures including flexion-extension, lateral bend, and the trunk rotational speeds. Measuring gravitational acceleration vector in the smart sensor along the tri-orthogonal axes offers an orientation of the object with the smart sensor attached to. The smart sensor is light in weight and has small form factor, making it an ideal wearable sensor for body posture measurement. Measured data from the smart senor is wirelessly transferred for analysis to a smartphone which has enough computing power, data storage and internet-connectivity, removing need for additional hardware for data post-processing. Based on the estimated body postures, WMDs risks can be conviently gauged by using existing WMDs risk assesment methods such as OWAS, RULA, REBA, etc.

An IoT-based particulate matter (PM2.5) sensing device (PSD) is developed. The PSD consists of a PM2.5 sensor, signal processing circuit, and wi-fi enabled-microprocessor along with temperature and humidity sensors. The PSD estimates PM2.5 density by measuring light scattered by PM2.5. To gauge performance of the PSD, PM2.5 density of open air was measured with the PSD and compared with that of the collocated-government-certified measuring station. Measurements were taken at a sampling frequency of 100 Hz and moving-averaged to remove measurement noise. When compared to the result of the measuring station, average percentile error of PM2.5 density from the PSD is found to be 31%. A correlation coefficient is found to be 0.72 which indicates a strong correlation. Instantaneous variation, however, may far exceed average errors, leading to a conclusion that the PSD is more suitable for estimating average trend of PM2.5 density variations than estimating instantaneous PM2.5 density.

The direction of the cutting tool plays a critical role in elliptical vibration cutting(EVC) where the cutting tool cuts workpiece in a trochoidal motion. In this study, EVC cutting device was developed using two parallel piezoelectric materials and it was observed that the rotation direction of the tool reverses as the EVC device undergoes resonance at which either flexural(cutting direction) or longitudinal( thrust direction) mode shapes occurs. To analytically explain reversal of the rotation direction, kinematic motion analysis of the tool was modified to incorporate amplification of the vibration amplitude and phase introduced by resonance. It successfully demonstrated, through Matlab simulation, reversal of the rotation direction of the cutting tool as the excitation frequency increases beyond resonance frequencies at which either flexural or longitudinal vibration occurs.

In elliptical vibration cutting(EVC) where the cutting tool traces a micro-scale 2-dimensional elliptical trajectory, the kinematical and vibrational characteristics of the EVC device greatly affect cutting performance. In this study, kinematical and vibrational characteristics of an EVC device constructed with two orthogonally-arranged stacked piezoelectric actuators were investigated both analytically and experimentally. The step voltage was applied to the orthogonal EVC device and the associated displacements of the cutting tool were measured to assess kinematical characteristics of the orthogonal EVC device. To investigate the vibrational characteristic of the orthogonal EVC, sinusoidal voltage was applied to the EVC device and the resulting displacements were measured. It was found from experiments that coupling of displacements in the thrust and cutting directions and the tilt of the major axis of the elliptical trajectory exists. In addition, as the excitation frequency is in vicinity of resonant frequencies the distortion in the shape of the elliptical trajectory becomes greater and change in the rotation direction occurs. To correct the shape distortion of the elliptical trajectory, the shape correcting procedure developed for the parallel EVC device was applied for the orthogonal EVC device and it was shown that the shape correcting method successfully corrects distortion.

Acoustic streaming Induced by longitudinal vibration at 30 kHz is visualized for a test fluid flow between the stationary glass plate and ultrasonic vibrating surface with particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) To measure an increase in the velocity of air flow due to acoustic streaming, the velocity of air flow in a gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator is obtained quantitatively using PIV. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap generates steady-state secondary vortex called acoustic streaming which enhances convective cooling of the stationary heat source. Heat transfer through air in the gap is represented by experimental convective heat transfer coefficient with respect to the gap. Theoretical analysis shows that gaps for maximum heat transfer enhancement are the multiple of half wavelength. Optimal gaps for the actual design are experimentally found to be half wavelength and one wavelength. A drastic temperature variation exists for the local axial direction of the vibrator according to the measurement of the temperature distribution in the gap. The acoustic streaming velocity of the test fluid in the gap is at maximum when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which are specifically 6 mm and 12 mm.

To obtain an elliptical trajectory at the cutting edge during elliptical vibration cutting, sinusoidal voltage excitations of two piezoelectric actuators have commonly been used. In this study, PWM excitation, which is relatively simple to generate, was employed and its characteristics were investigated. Inexperimental and analytical analyses, we found that for PWM excitation, the integer-multiple frequencies of the excitation voltage distorted the shape of the elliptical trajectory, whereas at a duty ratio(DR) of 50%, the distortion of the elliptical trajectory was minimized due to disappearance of the firstovertone. When the magnitude of the maximum excitation voltage was maintained at the same level for both PWM and sinusoidal excitation, PWM (DR=50%) excitation produced a greater vibration amplitude than sinusoidal excitation but resulted in more rapid saturation of a high-frequency power amplifier.
