본 논문은 한국의 무용역사기록학회에서 개최한 국제학술심포지엄 “국경너머의 무용사”의 특별한 의미를 되새기며 무용사 연구, 무용 이론연구, 무용문화유산의 전승과 연구 등 세 가지 범주에서 그 연구현황을 살펴본 글이다. 북조선무용이 예술적으로 지향하고 있는 목표나 미학은 무엇인지, 역사적 시대적 상황을 어떻게 구현했는지, 그와 연관하여 북조선무용의 역사적 정리가 어떻게 되어있는지, 그 연구 동향을 살펴보고 이를 통해 북조선무용의 발전사를 들여다봄으로써 좀 더 포괄적으로 접근하여 무용연구 현황에 대해 고찰하였다. 특히 그 춤이 담고 있는 사상, 사회와 문화적 맥락, 종합예술로서의 춤으로 다각적인 관점으로 여러 가지 이론체계와 미학적 특성, 원리와 방법 등의 연구가 반드시 상호병행을 해야 올바른 이해가 가능하다. 무용에 대한 기록은 고대로 거슬러 올라가는데, 북조선에서는 옛 기록 자료만으로 해명할 수 없었던 무용의 역사와 문화를 과학적으로 밝혀내고 새롭게 정립하고 체계화하기 위한 작업과 이를 바탕으로 조선민족의 우수한 전통과 무용문화유산이 대를 이어 계승하며 창조 발전해 나아가야 할 문제에 대한 “이론과 방법” 연구에 주력하였다. 이는 북조선의 무용예술을 발전시키는데 중요한 지침으로 된다. 또한 무용예술 발전의 과학적인 이론연구에 주력하여 무용교육 연구에 대한 중요도 인식으로 조선무용사를 비롯하여 조선민족무용기본, 무용 기초이론연구, 무용표기법 연구, 무용기법연구, 민속무용연구, 무용작품창작연구, 무대미술과 조명 연구 등 보다 다각적으로 체계적인 이론연구가 이루어지고 있다. 이러한 연구들은 무용기본으로부터 창작과 이론연구에 이르기까지 과학적인 이론을 토대로 체계화하는 학문으로서 무용이론연구의 기초적 토대를 마련해 준 데서 그 의미가 크다고 할 수 있겠다. This thesis examines the current status of the dance research of North Korea in three areas: research on dance history, research on dance theory, and the transmission and research of the cultural dance heritage. We investigate comprehensively by looking into the history of North Korean dance by identifying the artistic purpose of North Korea and the ways dance history books organize its history, and the research trend. In particular, it should be understood correctly on condition that the ideology contained in the dance, the social-cultural context, and the dance as a comprehensive art must be studied in paralleled with various theoretical systems, aesthetic characteristics, principles, and methods from a multifaceted perspective. The history and culture of dance that could not be explained with old materials alone have been identified scientifically, newly established, and systematized in North Korea, and based on this, North Korean dance scholarship focused on the study of theory and method on the issues regarding transmission of the excellent traditions and dance heritage of the nation. This focus become an important guideline to the development of dance art in North Korea. In addition, more systematic theoretical studies have been conducted in various ways, including Korean dance history, basic dance theory, and dance notation. These studies are significant in laying the foundation for the systemic and scientific study of dance theory. That would support the basics of dance, dance creation, and theoretical investigation.
