전통윤리에서 평등의 고려 대상 범위는 인간에게만 한정되었다. 싱어는 윤리적 대상을 인간에게만 한정하고 있는 전통적 윤리를 비판한다. 싱어는 인간이 아닌 다른 종에게까지 평등의 고려 대상 범위를 확대한다. 싱어는 쾌·고를 경험할 수 있는 동물들도 윤리적 고려대상이어야 함을 주장하며, 지금까지의 동물에 대한 인간의 종차별주의를 비판한다. 싱어는 결과주의적 이익평등 고려의 원칙을 윤리의 보편적 기준으로 상정하고 있으며, 평등의 최소 원리인 이익평등 고려 원칙을 인간종의 경계를 넘어서 인간 외의 다른 동물들에게까지 동등하게 적용할 것을 주장한다. 싱어는 “이 세계의 불필요한 고통을 줄이는 방향으로 인간의 도덕은 확장되어야 한다”라고 말하고 있다. 성차별주의(sexism), 인종차별주의(racism)와 같은 인간이라는 종의 범위에만 해당하는 공리주의가 아닌 모든 지각, 의식이 있는 존재의 고통의 경감이나 이해관심에 관한 인간의 윤리적 가치를 제시한다. 즉, 싱어는 인간의 도덕적 범위를 인간을 넘어 동물에까지 확장해야 한다고 역설하고 있다. 싱어의 동물윤리는 이익 평등 고려의 원칙, 쾌고 감수능력을 바탕으로 전통적 윤리에서 근거하고 있는 이성적 존재자에서 이제 인류는 고통과 쾌락을 경험할 수 있는 모든 존재의 평등한 윤리적 고려를 해야함을 주장하고 있다. 논자는 이 글에서 지금까지 인간의 종차별주의를 비판하면서, 싱어의 동물해방에 관한 입장을 논증하려한다. 더 이상 인간 이성이 지구위의 모든 생명체들과 인간을 구분 짓는 잣대가 아닌 쾌·고를 경험할 수 있는 모든 존재에게 인간의 실천적 윤리를 적용할 수 있는 싱어의 윤리를 논증할 것이다. Until now, mankind's ethics has only included haman beings. In other words, on the earth, all beings except for human are tools making human pleasing. And ethics has served as that purpose. But Peter Singer points to that situation, saying it is wrong for human beings to exclude animals on ethics' subject. He suggests that from now on we ,haman beings, should consider animals as ethics subject. That is, he proposes subjects of ethics should expand to animals. Peter Singer thinks that traditional ethics is rooted on Speciesism, founded by the Philosophers like Aristoteles, Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant, Rene Descartes. They think of animals as non-reasoning beings, justifing human beings using them for human's tools for human's pleasures. Peter Singer tries to expand the circle which includes animals feeling pleasure and suffering. He thinks ethical standard should be not reasons but sentience. In other words, he proposes that ethical standard should be founded by Sentience. On the earth, all beings especially including human beings and animals become objects of the principle of equal consideration of interests. The essence of the principle of equal consideration of interests is that we give equal weight in our moral deliberations to the like interests of all those affected by actions. And these interests include animals' pleasures not suffering from human's actions. I have looked at Singer's philosophy in particular his work, Animal Liberation. He strongly suggests that we should no longer give animals sufferings for tools of our pleasure. We now ought to consider animal's life as ethical attitude for their life.
