This paper treats the engine preparation processes for the flight test and its diagnostic method based on the literature survey and the experience of the rocket launch preparation. The engine preparation work for the flight test is performed in the assembly building in which leakage of engine components and workability of valves and sensors are checked. In the period of pre-launch operation and engine start for the engine diagnosis the parameters of sensors, rpm revolution speed and change of combustion chamber pressure are monitored. Technical know-how obtained in the launch preparation works will be useful for engine ground test and the KSLV-II engine development.

Rocket engine manufacturers in the world have been developing new engines to meet rapidly changing space development environment and demands of the launch business market. Especially in the U.S.A the rocket engines which use the natural gas or methane as fuel are under development and 3-D printing technology is used in production of rocket engine parts for time and cost saving. The engine development trend in Russia, Ukraine and China is the improvement of engine’s thrust and reliability by maximum utilization of Soviet space technologies.

A 3-tonf class liquid rocket engine that powers the upper stage of a small launcher and lifts 500 kg payload to 500 km SSO is designed. The small launcher is to utilize the flight-proven technology of the 75-tonf class engine for the first stage. A combination of liquid oxygen and liquid methane has been selected as their cryogenic states can provide an extra boost in specific impulse as well as enable a weight saving via the common dome arrangement. An expander cycle is chosen among others as the low-pressure operation makes it robust and reliable while a specific impulse of over 360 seconds is achievable with the nozzle extension ratio of 120. Key components such as combustion chamber and turbopump are designed for additive manufacturing to a target cost. The engine system provides an evaporated methane for the autogenous pressurization system and the reaction control of the stage. This upper stage propulsion system can be extended to various missions including deep space exploration.
