Since Han-ok, the traditional Korean-style house, is composed with combinations of complex components in various shapes and sizes, it is essential to categorize the components into several types for digitalization of Han-ok information. This study applied feature-based classification using BIM parametric modelling methods. After investigating ‘Parameter and Formula relations’, ‘Parametric description’ and ‘Instance diagram’ of Han-ok components, the study established XML libraries for the parametric modelling of open BIM. The IFC-XML libraries include parametric and properties information as well as the geometric information of Han-ok. For the combination of parametric and non-parametric geometry, the study also suggested a new methodology of using ‘comments’ inside IFC, which enabled interworking between IFC and XML. A prototype of BIM browsing module was developed in the last phase of this study to validate the conformance of the IFC-XML libraries. This integrated browser for Han-ok allows the users, both experts and non-experts, to check and manipulate Han-ok component fabrication by changing specific parameters promptly. The browser successfully showed automatic changes of all related Han-ok elements in accordance with the parameters, relationships and formulas of components.

Recently, Buildings have been ordered larger, more complicated, and free form design. So the adoption of BIM technology is in creasing the demand for large and complex construction of information for efficient management and utilization. Properties of BIM model can be used to automatically calculate quantities information in estimates field. This characteristic is expected to have a significant effect for the accuracy and reliability of the construction Cost estimates. This research is to develop a data model for Open BIM-based estimates to ensure accuracy and reliability, and improve interoperability of information. So studies of the overview of BIM-based QTO and estimates were researched. Also domestic and foreign BIM-based QTO and estimates case research were analyzed to draw out the implications to find a solution to the problems. Necessary properties requirements were drawn out by analyzing IDM and IFC spec was drawn out by analyzing MVD. Through these a method for Open BIM-based estimates was proposed. Also, to increase the application of the construction information classification system, domestic and foreign application of construction information classification systems were researched and analyzed. From the domestic research utilization the construction type classification of Public Procurement Service was selected as the most effective classification system and was applied. In addition “Code Generator” was developed and Pilot test model was applied to verify the data model and the availability of requirements was reviewed. With the variety of construction information classification systems that exist in the domestic construction industry, the method from this research can be applied into the domestic practical field.

In response to the increasing severity of environmental pollution, the energy-efficient designs that minimize carbon emissions have been increasingly discussed. After the increasing adoption of Building Information Modeling(BIM), various domestic and international attempts for BIM-based energy performance assessments have been investigated, but most of them have generated various problems from the lack of data interoperability. It makes users inefficient with inputting again the building information which are not compatible at energy analysis phase. Also through energy analysis, the feed-back of results can not be applied bidirectionally for back to the early modeling phase. The purpose of this study is to suggest improvement of interoperability for open BIM-based building energy assessment through object library system. To achieve this purpose, the authors have constructed the object material library based on ASHRAE Handbook reflected domestic material classification system and developed module for pre-checking and modification of material information in energy performance assessment. This study could reduce confusions from different processes and environments and offer the confidence to user. Furthermore as the alternative to lack of data interoperability, the object material library applied domestic state and ASHRAE Handbook can be reliable.

As there has been a growing concern about environmental problems, ecological concepts apply for green growth in the field of architecture. Thereupon, the demand and interest for the Korean Traditional House known as typical of environment-friendly houses increased. There are lots of difficulties in applying the Korean Traditional House to design and construction phases, because of the lack of experts and data to support the demand. To solve these problems, a system for construction and dissemination of information about the Korean Traditional House is required. Throughout applying an Open BIM to the Korean Traditional House, this paper focuses on the requirements and a standardized system for effective utilization of information. In addition, the authors propose a framework including the integrated information system which will utilize and further disseminate the information. The application of an Open BIM-based system helps increase interoperability among heterogeneous BIM tools. Also, the standardized system makes it possible to define standard elements. It is hoped that the typology elements make mass production possible. The framework will greatly contribute to the design and construction of the Korean Traditional House.

Recently, the needs for sharing and exchanging drawing information between 2D and 3D CAD data in complex engineering fields are well recognized throughout the construction industries. The purpose of this study is to develop product model-based information framework for exchange and sharing of CAD drawing information between 2D and 3D CAD data in complex engineering fields. The current IFC2×2 model has the model space elements definitions to represent 2D drawing but not the paper space elements definitions. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the current IFC model to include the paper space elements for complex products. The study has been developed 1) IFC paper space extension model, 2) information framework to enable sharing and exchange of product model by adding various information factors, 3) the standard APIs and an IFC2DBrowser.

With the increasing demands of BIM design in Korean construction industry, it becomes an important issue to develop a proper standard of design fee for BIM. For now, many architects who are asked to design with BIM tools and produce BIM data with high quality are suffering from the lack of the new standard for the fee and necessary studies about it. The conventional standard without considering additional works for BIM design results relative fee declines and so, decrease of design quality. This study started with analyses of foreign guidelines and regulations for BIM design to learn their ways of dealing with the changing design fee. After comparing its results with current Korean situation, the study also conducted surveys to hear the opinions of Korean professionals. In the end of the paper, some troubles of conventional approaches are pointed out as a result of those researches, and considerable factors for the proper direction of a BIM design fee standard are suggested. It would work as an essential guideline for the further studies which try to establish more accurate and practical standards in the future.
