Bearing information of target is used critically for target tracking in underwater environment. In passive sonar, target bearing measurements are obtained by processing the acoustic signal emanating from the target. PDA tracking algorithm is usually applied in this case since bearing measurements have several peaks due to interference with other acoustic sources or reflections from underwater media. In this paper, we propose a modified PDA algorithm adopting new probabilistic distributions of the number, position, and amplitude of peaks based on the analysis of real data. This algorithm is tested on real and artificially generated data. The computer simulation result shows improvement of the tracking performance.

Coherent signals invalidates the direct application of DOA's estimation using noise subspace based eigendecomposition methods. In this paper, we point out some problems of the algorithm proposed by Kim et al. in the case of coherent signals and we improve it by using spatial smoothing processing. The proposed algorithm obtains similar resolution capability with less calculation burden compared to that of WSF algorithm. When the sources have different power, we propose modified WSF algorithm to save calculation burden. Computer simulations are performed to verify the proposed algorithm.

The performance of the BEWE(Bearing Estimation Without Eigendecom-position) algorithm depends on the sensor outputs which are selected to construct the projection matrix. In this paper, we construct the covariance matrix of the bearing estimates for two targets and propose the criterion to select the sensor outputs which minimize the value of the covariance matrix. The computer simulation conforms that the estimation error is smallest when the sensor outputs are selected based on the proposed criterion.

We attempt to control the chaotic phenomenon, which is owing to model order mismatch in a simple adaptive control system, by applying appropriate feedback control. Feedback gain is obtained by linearization method. As a result, we can increase the range of adaptation gain and convergence rate. These results are verified by computer simulations.

The problem of tracking bearing measurement data, which is important for the improvement of BOTMA(bearings-only target motion analysis) algorithms, is discussed. In passive sonar, own-ship maneuver has a major effect on the bearing dynamics and it can be easily obtained from own-ship's navigational gyro. In this paper, a bearing tracking algorithm which uses own-ship's course and course rate as an input is presented. This algorithm combined with JPDA algorithm is applied to a passive sonar tracking problem and the simulation result shows the dramatic tracking improvement.
