This study was carried out to find out optimum plant density and harvest time to increase the marketing value of waxy corn hybrid with colored pericarp. Two waxy corn hybrids, "Eolrukchal 1" of bi-color and "Heukjinjuchal" of black color, were developed at 2007, 2008 in National Institute Crop Science, respectively. Generally colored waxy corn has problems of longer maturing period and shorter total ear length (TEL) and filled ear length ratio (FELR) than those of white waxy corn. It is important to increase the marketing value of colored waxy corns. TEL, ear diameter, FELR, and weight of ear(g/ear) were increased as plant density decreased. The optimum plant density for ear of good quality was 4,100~4,700 (plants/10a) for waxy corn hybrid, "Eolrukchal 1" and "Heukjinjuchal". The characteristics and yield of ear were not distinguished but color of ear showed distinct change in "Eolrukchal 1" and "Heukjinjuchal" at harvest time as days after silking.

Increased application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer top-dressing during growth is an effective option for enhancing N supply to soybeanplants. SS2-2 was characterized by the superior ability of symbiotic N2 fixation at the level of 30 kg N ha-1. But, the response ofnitrogen fixation ability of supernodulating soybean mutant, SS2-2, to N fertilizer application rate remains unclear. The objective ofthis experiment was to compare the response of N fertilizer top-dressing on N accumulation and N2 fixation between supernodulatingmutant, SS2-2, and wild-type, Sinpaldalkong 2. The effect of N fertilizer top-dressing (0.6 g N pot-1 top-dressing) on the nitrogenaccumulation and redistribution were compared between SS2-2 and Sinpaldalkong 2. N fertilizer top-dressing at R1 stage increase inplant dry weight, relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), nitrogen harvest index (NHI), and N redistribution (NR). SS2-2 showed highest N concentration, 65.0 mg N g DW-1, followed by Sinpaldalkong 2 and En1282, and the N content per plant didnot show a significant difference between SS2-2 and Sinpaldalkong 2. The N2 fixation rate was significantly reduced by N top-dressing,but the amount of N2 fixation was not changed due to an improved dry weight without changes of N concentration. In addition,SS2-2 showed higher NHI, NR and NRE than Sinpaldalkong 2. These results suggested that supernodulating soybean mutants, SS2-2, could be characterized by high N concentration and N2 fixation regardless of N fertilizer top-dressing due to a higher nitrate toleranceof supernodulating mutants than that of wild-type.

Purpose: The prognosis of gastric cancer depends on the depth of invasion, lymph-node metastasis, invasion to adjacent tissues, and distant metastasis. Recently, it is known that tumor-associated proteases and adhesion molecules have been shown to play a relevant role in the process of progression and metastasis. The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the value of MMP-2 (matrix metalloproteinase), cathepsin D and E-cadherin as prognostic factors. Materials and Methods: In this study, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from 69 patients with gastric cancer were immunohistochemically studied using antibodies to MMP-2, cathepsin D, and E-cadherin, and their expressions were analyzed according to the pathologic stage, lymph-node metastasis, histological differentiation, and patient survival. The medical records of these patients were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Increased expression of MMP-2 significantly correlated with advanced pathologic stage (P=0.026). Patients with lymph-node metastasis also had increased expression of MMP-2. Those patients with increased expression of MMP-2 showed a poorer survival; nevertheless, it was not statistically significant. Increased expression of cathepsin D significantly correlated with advanced pathologic stage (p=0.029). However, no correlation was observed between advanced pathologic stage and either lymph-node status or histological differentiation. Patients with increased expression of cathepsin D had a poorer survival, but that result was not statistically significant. No association was found between reduced expression of E-cadherin and pathologic stage, lymph-node status, or histological differentiation. Also, no correlation was found between the expression of E-cadherin and survival. In addition, when a combination of MMP-2 and cathepsin D expressions was analyzed, if both were negative, the survival seems to be longer, but it was not statistically significant. Conclusions: In patients with gastric cancer, expressions of MMP-2 and cathepsin D correlated with tumor stage; therefore, they may be considered as prognostic factors.
