패트릭 캐바나의 후기시에 나타난 희극 정신

        김연민 ( Kim Yeonmin ) 대한영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학연구 Vol.40 No.3

In renouncing The Great Hunger (1942), a masterpiece in which the revivalist ideology of W. B. Yeats is fiercely criticized in a realistic style, Patrick Kavanagh in his later years assumes for his poetic hegira a comic spirit that can be examined in two ways: form and content. Recovering from lung cancer in 1955 by the Grand Canal in Dublin, the poet uses the distinctive style of the urban pastoral in praise of God’s grace and love. As he sonnets the epiphany, he is no longer tied to reactionary anger against Irish literary revivalists but instead sings for the values of surrender and “not-caring,” through which he can embrace with loving arms the reality he once disparaged. In contrast with the tragic atmosphere pervasive in revivalist literature, which focuses primarily on heroic deeds of the doomed, Kavanagh underscores with his celebratory tone the significance of the simple lives of ordinary people. He also aspires to a utopian community, theorized as parochialism, in which the residents are filled with a sense of autonomy, unswayed by evaluation from outside. Despite their nationalist creed, the revivalists, however, anxiously depend on the judgment of British critics. Kavanagh’s comic spirit culminates in his humorous satire on revivalist ideology. Distancing himself from his earlier lambasting style in The Great Hunger as well as from Yeats’s dramatized solemnity, he evades all sorts of seriousness with his comic appropriation of Greek mythology and Alexander Pope. This study aims at suggesting a literature class model based on students’ responses to literary texts in order to enhance both their pleasure of reading and critical thinking. Whereas traditional literature classes focus on reading activities that guide students to a fixed textual meaning, the class model puts more emphasis on post-reading activities that enable students to transform literary texts to different genres, such as painting, music, and performance, expanding the textual meaning to multiple possibilities. Through the transformative post-reading activities, students can read the original texts more closely and creatively.

미리암 쿡의『하야티, 나의 인생』에 나타난 아랍 서발턴의 타자 윤리학

        김연민(Kim, Yeonmin) 새한영어영문학회 2013 새한영어영문학 Vol.55 No.4

In Hayati, My Life (2000) American feminist Miriam Cooke resuscitates a voice of a Palestinian subaltern. Tracing back at the three generations of Palestinian women, she grapples with a possibility of subaltern resistance from the perspective of a mute girl, Afaf, who suffers socio-political discrimination. Her resistant voice can be heard through the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, the ethics of the Other. Afaf establishes her impregnable subjectivity through “enjoyment”, the acts of painting and cutting her hair. Describing several images of faces and eyes, she once completely forgotten as a subaltern vindicates other subalterns killed and deserted in war. In following the order emanating from the face of the other, that is hospitality, she welcomes a wanderer in her house and makes him a friend. Her unconditional hospitality makes a stark contrast to an Iraqi soldier’s refusal of the ethical command as he hideously murders with a chauvinistic zeal a defenseless old man. Choosing a subaltern of subalterns, Cooke allows Afaf to speak aloud to the majoritarian Arab feminists as well as Arab nationalists, in search of an absolute exteriority of the other, which is a key to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

A definition of Irish modernism, confused by different perspectives on its era and ideology, can be re-illuminated by the concept of the war machine suggested by Deleuze and Guattari. In pursuit of the exteriority to the state apparatus, the deterritorial movement in the war machine resonates with that of Irish modernists, who take various lines of flight from Irish state ideology. The significance of Irish modernism as a war machine can be discussed in three ways. Theoretically examining Fredric Jameson’s Marxist discourse that analyzes Irish modernism in terms of the mode of production, I will demonstrate counter-examples found in James Joyce’s Ulysses replete with unknowability, and suggest a Deleuzean concept of the regime of signs as an alternative to Jameson’s. In comparison to the Revivalists driven by a work ethic for the establishment of the nation-state, Irish modernists, such as Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and Sean O’Casey, express resistant voices throughout their works aspiring to the exteriority to state power. As an appropriated war machine by the state, Patrick Kavanagh can also be considered a minoritarian modernist, a whistle-blower, in that he demystifies the state-founding ideology, which heedlessly romanticizes the rural Ireland. 토마스 하디 시에 나타난 멜랑콜리 시학

        김연민 ( Kim Yeonmin ) 대한영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학연구 Vol.42 No.1

This paper aims at reading Thomas Hardy’s poetry with the concept of melancholy. Behind the overwhelming images of a merciless God/Nature Hardy describes, which traditionally characterize him as a pessimist, many a loser in modern history appears in his poems. His major concern is human failures and its fleeting nature. His steady contemplation on all the vanishing reveals his poetic ground: a sense of melancholy. Hardy’s poetics of melancholy are discussed in two ways: a melancholy view of nature/history and his own use of allegory. In contrast to Romantic poets, who aspire to dialectical synthesis and a harmonious resolution of conflicts, based on teleological, progressive history, Hardy reveals the existence of those who fail and are forgotten, their wishes denied. Given that one who is a melancholic refuses any synthetic totality, with his consistent reflections on the transient, he considers history a decline. A melancholic thinker expresses through allegories the necessity of extinction of all beings. With his passionate concerns about the defeated, Hardy is thus a melancholic allegorizer. Mysterious animals in his poems appear as an allegory for the fleeting nature of human history. Unlike the symbolic usage of animals in Romanticism, Hardy’s allegories of deserted objects and animals uncover the fleeting feature of the world.**2(Chonnam National University)

        신형식주의, 신미학주의, 영시교육―시적 사건을 찾아서

        김연민 ( Yeonmin Kim ) 21세기영어영문학회 2018 영어영문학21 Vol.31 No.3

This paper aims to illuminate new formalism and new aestheticism as alternative theoretical bases to previous literary theories of new criticism and new historicism for teaching English poetry. Both new formalism and new aestheticism concur in the way in which poetry (and its textual meaning) occurs as an event through the readers’ experiences of reading. First, new formalism emphasizes the significance of formal elements in poetry. Unlike the former theories concerned with historico-political implications of the text, new formalism searches for the poetic singularity occurring through the materiality of the formal elements of the text, irreducible to exterior values. The singularity leads readers to the poetic event, a temporal, somatic experience of poetry reading. Second, new aestheticism reevaluates the aesthetic, neglected by contemporary leftist theorists preoccupied with politics. Instead, new aestheticism notices the importance of the readers’ affect in constructing textual meaning, which is always in flux. In applying new formalism and new aestheticism to English poetry classes, poetry teachers can retrieve the poetic event by encouraging their students to transform poetry to other genres. In so doing, the readers are expected to regain the pleasure of reading and the ability to share the aesthetic experiences with others.

The flow rate and the behavior of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) from a input shaft to the clutch plates have been simulated as a three-dimensional and transient-state using the free surface method of commercial CFD code STAR-CD. During disengagement of the wet clutch plates, amount of heat energy dissipated by the lubricating oil that flow the nominalgap between the plates which have relative rotating speed. To supply the oil equally into the nominal clearances among the friction plates, a lay out of the lubrication passage hole configuration is very important. Since a hole configuration can be changed by the hole number, shape and the position at the hub, the optimization of the oil hole configuration is necessary. It is difficult to estimate the flow rate of the lubricating oil exactly at each part of the automatic transmission because of its structural complexity under rotating conditions. This paper suggest the oil hole configurations which can distribute the ATF uniformly around the multi-plates with the optimization method. From this result, we can obtain various information about the lubricating state at every part of the plates and can help our judgment of whether lubrication is sufficient
