This paper presents a research about the change of structural characteristics of steel cable-stayed bridges which suffer cable breaking down. Cables of cable-stayed bridges can be broken by crash of the vehicles, fire, fatigue fracture, and so on. It can lead the change of internal force distribution of main members and the ultimate capacity because of girder-cable-mast interaction. A effect of cable breaking down was considered using nonlinear finite element analysis and the ultimate analysis was performed to investigate the change of ultimate capacity after cable breaking down. In this study, fan-type cable stayed bridge was adopted as the analysis model. As performing the cable breaking down analysis, the change of internal force distribution after individual cable breaking down was studied. And then, the characteristics of ultimate capacity reduction were investigated with respect to various breaking down situations.
