A women`s history of sport requires us to question some of our most basic views and assumptions of historiography. Much of our prejudice is buried in assumptions conceived as a historical truth. A women-centric history questions what society considers to be morally true, historically accurate, bodily real, and naturally correct. No field of study is left uninterrogated. Even certain assumptions in feminist theory and history have been shown to be inadequate. A critical examination of not only historical facts, but also the historians making them, is essential when attempting to overcoming race-, class-, and gender-specific relationships of power and dominance. Without credible evidence, such an examination of our most basic understandings of the world could be very confusing and frightening. This paper will apply this paradigm to Korea where the traditional conception of women`s roles and the gendering of sport have already been called into question by various histories. In order to develop a critical approach to apply to Korea, this study first examines the modern history of American women`s sport in its social context. In particular, it examines how women`s sport developed against the traditional values of genders, races, and classes, and what it meant to the society as a cultural artifact. It also shows how the position of women`s sport has changed in relation to the economic, social, and cultural context. It was clear that not only the social situations affected women`s position in society and sport, but also that the development of women`s sport contributed to raising women`s awareness of the feminist movement.

대중/공공스포츠역사학의 동향과 시사점 -스포츠박물관을 중심으로-

이 연구는 스포츠역사학의 대중화라는 문제의식 아래 다음의 두 가지 사항을 논의한다. 먼저 미국과 서유럽에서 등장한 대중/공공역사학의 개념, 성격, 의의 등을 역사학의 역사철학적 관점(historiography)에서 요약하여 정리한다. 그 구체적 내용은 첫째, 역사학 밖의 대중을 역사하기의 독자 혹은 고객으로서 뿐만 아니라 역사하기의 새로운 주체로 받아들이는 열린 태도, 둘째, 과거는 어느 누구에게나 열려 있다는 역사하기의 민주적 아이디어, 셋째, 역사적 작업의 본질을 과거를 재현하는 장르로 이해하는 역사인식이다. 다음으로 대중/공공역사학의 흐름이 북미와 유럽 중심의 스포츠역사 연구 공동체 속에서 어떻게 유입, 전개, 발전해왔는지를 소개한다. 대중/공공역사학에 대한 스포츠역사학자들의 관심이 스포츠박물관이라는 연구 주제 혹은 대상을 구심점으로 하여 표출되어 왔음을 주목하고, 그들이 수행한 역사적 작업들에 스며있는 문제의식, 역사철학, 방법론적 성격 등을 요약하여 정리한다. 결론에서는 한국의 현실 속에서 상상할 수 있는 대중/공공스포츠역사학의 가능성과 방향성에 대한 필자들의 입장을 피력한다. 근대역사학 패러다임의 실증주의적 역사관, 다시 말해 역사적 사실의 발견을 통해 과거의 스포츠를 객관적으로 복원하거나 검증하는 작업이 지배적인 한국 스포츠역사 연구의.문화’속에서, 대중/공공스포츠역사학은 과거의 스포츠를 이해하는 .태도.와 .정서.에 대한 관심을 촉발시키고, 나아가 과거를 재현하는 작업의 역사철학적 본질과 방법론적 쟁점에 대한 성찰의 계기를 제공한다. As an attempt to think about the popularization of Korean sport history, this paper discusses three main things. First, it will be introduced what public/popular history is, how it has been developed, and why it is important to history as an academic discipline. Second, it will be summarized how sport historian embraced public/popular history into their practices in terms of what theoretical, critical, and methodological aspects they have focused. Third, I will discus why public/popular history is useful in the ways in which Korean sport history envisions its popularization in Korean society. To be more specific, I highlight two ideas: an insight for understanding sport history as a process and sport historians. role of critic. Based upon these two, I will argue that Korean sport historians might need to actively embrace practices of public/popular history into their studies of the Korean sporting past.

[목적] 이 연구는 사실과 허구가 조합하여 공존하는 ‘다큐드라마’라는 특정한 장르의 출현에 주목하고, 과거의 스포츠를 다루고 재현하는 스포츠다큐드라마에 대한 학술적 관심과 탐구가 체육·스포츠역사학의 확장과 책무라는 관점에서 어떠한 가치와 유의미성을 제공하고 마련하는지를 살펴보는 것이다. [방법] 이 연구는 문헌 연구로서 크게 세 가지 분야의 문헌들에 대한 비판적, 해석적 리뷰를 실시한다. 첫째, 역사적 (스포츠)영화의 역사성 혹은 비역사성을 논의, 주장, 제기, 검토한 (스포츠)역사학자들의 저서, 논문, 논평, 에세이들, 둘째, ‘다큐드라마’라는 장르를 구심점으로 형성되어 있는 소위 ‘다큐드라마 연구’와 관련된 문헌들, 셋째, 영상역사 혹은 영화적 역사하기의 가능성과 잠재성을 주목하고 새로운 시각문화 중심의 역사학을 지향하고 탐색, 논의하는 문헌들이다. [결과] 문헌 검토와 리뷰의 과정을 통해, 이 연구의 결과를 크게 세 부분으로 구성하여 제시한다. 첫째, 체육·스포츠역사학자들이 과거의 스포츠를 다루거나 재현하는 대중(문화)적 영상물에 대해 어떠한 지배적 관점을 가지고 비판적으로 지적하고 또 문제화하고 있는지를 북미와 한국의 사례로 구별하여 소개한다. 둘째, 역사적 영화가 생성, 매개, 제공하는 새로운 내용과 성격의 역사적 유의미성을 탐색, 논의한 연구들의 핵심 쟁점을 요약, 정리한다. 셋째, 다큐드라마 연구의 지형과 담론을 크게 세 가지 항목, 개념적 정의, 과거를 재현하는 모드로서의 성격, 문화적 기억과의 연관성을 중심으로 개괄하여 소개한다. [결론] 이상의 결과를 토대로, 스포츠다큐드라마에 대한 학술적 관심과 탐구가 체육·스포츠역사학의 확장과 책무라는 비전과 명제에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는지에 대한 가치와 유의미성을 제안하고 주장한다. [Purpose] The purpose of this study is to identify why and how sports docudrama is one of the unique objects for the scholarship of sport history.[Methods] As a review study, this paper pays attention to, collects, and critically reviews three dimensions of the literatures: 1) ones that claim and argue for a-historicity of historical sport films by pointing out how they are full of actual errors, mistakes, and misrepresentation, and why they are problematic, 2) ones that belong to so called ‘the study of docudrama’ with specific focus on the themes of definition, mode of representation, and cultural memory, and 3) ones that attempt to envision the possibility of visual history or filmic history from the perspective of historiography and some other epistemological issues.[Results] Following the above review method, the result of this paper is also divided into three parts: 1) how sport historians respond to and criticize historical sport films from the sense based on the modern historiography, 2) how a group of historians argue why historical sport films can be one of the promising way of doing histories, 3) review of the study of docudrama, focusing on what is docudrama, why it can be a mode of representation, and how it resonates to cultural memory. [Conclusions] As a conclusion, this paper argues that a more collectively academic concerns to sport docudrama paves way for developing and envisioning the scholarship of sport history.
