Safety and environmental standards for ships operating in cold climates and ice covered waters include international regulations, regional regulations as well as classification requirements, and are requesting a more unified approach to the requirements for the design and operation of ships for service in the Arctic. The first edition of the Polar Class Rules, based on the IACS Unified Requirements for Polar Ships, was published in January 2008 edition of the Ship Rules to promote the safety of navigation and to prevent pollution from ship operations. Polar Class notations cover design requirements for hull structure and machinery systems in low temperature, and are intended for vessels operating Arctic or sub-Arctic waters during independent operation or with assistance from icebreakers at all times. In this study, rules for winterization of ships intended for cold climate operation over longer periods are explained.

The electric propulsion system requires more reliability and safety than the conventional propulsion system because any sudden changes of electric system would bring tremendous effects on the ship’s safety and propulsion. So it is very important to consider the potential transient effects. This paper discusses one of the worst electric accident. That is, one or two of generators are out of service in normal seagoing condition. And the appropriate measures are simulated in order to prevent the frequency decline that can bring the other generator’s tripping. In addition, the relation between the transient effects and the major factors(inertia of generator/motors, governor’s drooping characteristic and response speed) are also identified using the ETAP software.

The diverse environmental conditions in cold districts and the exacting design and specification requirements for suitable and economic performance in seaway environments make the task demanding. The low-temperature of the ice-bound seas through which these vessels are to sail require special measures for the hull structures, the main engine, the propellers and shafts, and the outfittings. In this paper, the requirements for the main engine, the propellers and shafts, and the outfittings apply to vessels that are designed, equipped and intended to operate in low temperature environments where the service temperature may be encountered such as Arctic and Antarctic Oceans.

Cracking of the welded zone of high strength steel is one of the most important factors of weldability and many kinds of test methods have been proposed to study that. In this study, cold cracking susceptibility of welded zone for high strength steel (ABS EH32 steel) with the shielded metal are welding was investigated by the tensile restraint cracking test. Effects of diffects of diffusible hydrogen contents on root cracking, lower critical stress, crack initiation and fracture method, hardness distribution of the welded zone and fractography were mainly investigated. The wet electrodes with higher diffusible hydrogen contents showed lower the critical lower stress level than the dried ones. Because of the hydrogen embrittlement, the heat affected zone by using the wet electrodes had higher hardness values than that by using the dried ones. Fracture surface of the heat affected zone with the wet electrodes showed mainly brittle fracture (intergranular and cleavage) and that of the weld metal also showed partially that due to the hydrogen embrittlement.
