This paper aims to examine social criticism ‘trivialized’ in The Importance of Being Earnest. At first, as the play was hailed as a great comedy, the aspects of social criticism which are expressed from time to time have mostly been disregarded. While the play is delivering humor, wit, and satire, it often touches on acute social issues including class, economy, politics, and dominant values. The farcical world represented in the play, however, prevents the audience from perceiving the problems as ‘serious.’ Furthermore, the social institutions and values are not developed into fully-fledged discussions. The sensitive and controversial problems of the society are only briefly mentioned in the nonsensical environment. Accordingly, ‘serious’ topics become trivialized with clamorous laughter. Especially Lady Bracknell, an aristocrat, often displays contempt and fear toward lower class people who can commit outrageous violence that might subvert the established system. Her attitude and behavior relating to class issues reflect the society which was undergoing drastic change. At that time, social unrests were often engendered by riots or rebellions of lower class people. Besides, blood lines, family, and marriage, which are the basis of the Victorian society to maintain its social order, are targeted by satire. These concerns valued at that time are ridiculed throughout the play. Reversed gender norms are also a source of laughter. Women characters have the initiative in their relationships with their partners. While they pursue their goal insistently, male characters are usually passive and are willing to accommodate themselves to their partners’ desires. Wilde expresses his revolutionary ideas by locating the social institutions and values of the farcical world in which their meanings are inverted and trivialized.

The performance of the daylighting in buildings depends on building site and shape. As an energy saving design strategy, daylighting is a key issue in green building design. In this paper, the influence of the adjacent or obstructed building on daylighting performance of the office building in urban area was analyzed. A typical office building about 20 storeys with obstructed buildings has been modeled and simulated using Radiance. The parametric simulations have been performed to analyze the influence of the daylighting performance (illuminance, luminance) of the analyzed office. The results show that the possibility of the glare was decreased when the obstructed building is located in south, also the illuminance level was significantly decreased. When the obstructed building islocated in north, the changes of the illuminance level and luminance possibility were somewhat small compared to the unobstructed condition. The daylighting performance of the analyzed building was most affected by the obstructed building in winter season.

본 연구는 국가의 경제발전은 물론 대인관계와 사회적응에 매우 중요한 역 할을 하는 성취동기 중 아동의 성취동기를 측정할 수 있는 척도를 개발하고자 하였다. 서울시내 초등학교 2곳에 재학중인 5,6학년 아동 586명을 대상으로 설문지 조사를 실시하였다. 예비 연구를 통하여 구성된 81개 문항의 척도를 문항 변별도 측면에서 양호한 수준 х²의 유의도 p<.01과 .25이상 V계수의 68 개 문항을 추출하였다. 68개 문항을 요인 분석하여 고유치 1이상, 요인부하량 .30이상인 49개 문항을 추출한 후 회귀분석을 적용한 결과 설명력의 증가분이 3%미만인 13개 문항을 척도 구성에서 제외시켜 총 36개 문항으로 아동의 성 취동기 최종 측정 척도가 개발되었다. 척도의 신뢰도는 문항 내적일치도 지수 인 Cronbach의 α계수로 산출하였는데, .85로 만족할만한 수준으로 나타나 개 발된 척도가 우리나라 아동의 성취동기를 측정하기 위한 유용한 도구로 검증 되었다. Our purpose is to make up criteria for children's motivation of achievement and develop them into reliable that effectively fit the domestic situations, through testing its reliability and validity. With a view to developing those criteria, questionnaire items were drawn out from our basic investigation and preliminary study, and reliability and validity were tested. For this, we carried out a survey from October 25, 2003 to November 7, 2003 on 586 children who were attending two primary schools in Seoul, in 5th and 6th grade, and analyzed the results. Out of 81 questionnaire items constructed through the preliminary study, we extracted 68 items which show satisfactory level of discrimination with х² confidence level p<.01 and V coefficient greater than .25. The factor analysis was performed on the 68 items and 49 items were extracted which have eigen value greater than 1 and factor load greater than .30. Then regression analysis was applied so that 13 items were taken out of consideration for the criteria, whose incremental contribution to the explained proportion due to regression turned out to be less than 3%. As a result, a total of 36 items were selected as the final measurement criteria was assessed by Cronbach' α coefficient for the items, and we obtained its value of .85 which is at a satisfactory level. The developed criteria has proven to be a useful tool for measuring domestic children's motivation of achievement.

This article examines the service sector which is entwined with "racialized" and "gendered" Asian America. In history, the service businesses like restaurants, laundries, or domestic types of job have provided Asian American men with space in which they could survive avoiding discriminations. Even at present, not insignificant numbers of Asian Americans including new immigrants are still involved in the service jobs. Laboring in this vocational zone, they have to face the predicament in which their sexuality is degraded in their power relation with the hegemonic group. The main characters in Sakina's Restaurant and The Last Hand Laundry in Chinatown also encounter feminization or emasculation. The narrowed working space and the limited movement of Crazy Tom and Azgi in the plays signifies feminine characterization. Especially, Azgi's transvestite scene summarizes the history of Asian American men who have experienced the operation of emasculation or feminization in their work place. While the service men in the plays, fulfill the labor for their livelihood, they might emphasize the image of Asian American males' deviant sexuality. The characters, however, complicate and resist the sexual implication of their working zone. Through eccentric behaviors or protest they attempt to subvert the stigmatic image produced historical and socio-political context. It does not signify their ultimate victory. However, in so doing they come to stand in the long line of Asian Americans resisting the dominant who deprive them of virility.

본 연구는 현재 유아교육기관 평가를 실시하고 있는 미국ㆍ영국ㆍ호주 세 나라의 평가제도의 역사, 목적, 절차, 내용 및 활용 등을 비교 분석하여 우리나라 유아교육기관 평가체제 개발을 위한 시사점을 도출하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 각 나라의 비교결과를 바탕으로 우리나라 유아교육기관 인정 평가 체제 구축을 위한 시사점으로 첫째, 유아교육기관 평가의 목적을 기관의 질 향상에 있음을 명백히 하고, 둘째 평가과정에 적극적인 부모 참여방법을 강구하며, 마지막으로 전문가의 장학제도가 활성화되어야 한다는 점들을 들 수 있다.
