계급, 취향, 소리 : 영화 <기생충>의 소리 문화 연구

자본주의는 오늘날의 세계 사회를 움직이는 중요한 동력 중 하나이다. 자본주의 세계 사회의 중요한 단면 중하나는 양극화된 계급 구조이다. 흥미롭게도 이러한 구조는 세계 사회의 소리 문화에서 잘 나타난다. 소리 문화는구성원들의 사상 속에서 선택되는 소리들로 이뤄지는 문화를 말한다. 소리들은 사람들의 수직적 사고와 맞물려 있는 계급 구조를 은밀하게 드러낸다. 따라서 이 구조는 다양한 예술 작품 속에서 독특하게 풍자되어 왔다. 영화<기생충>은 대표적인 예다. 영화는 상류 및 하류 계급 가족의 소리 문화를 이루는 ‘바로크 양식’들을 통해 계급구조를 흥미롭게 들려준다. 바로크 양식의 사회적 이미지 중 하나는 도달할 수 없는 최상류 계급이다. 영화에서는이러한 양식들이 다양한 방식으로 사용되면서 두 가족의 내면을 넌지시 보여준다. 나아가 자본주의 한국·세계 사회의 숨은 계급 구조 및 소리 질서를 조용히 드러낸다. 영화 <기생충> 연구는 아직 초기 단계이기에 이러한 측면에 관한 본격적 연구는 찾기 어렵다. 이 점을 고려해 논문은 <기생충> 소리 문화를 구성하는 ‘바로크 양식’들이어떻게 두 계급의 사상을 드러내는지, ‘바로크 양식’들은 어떠한 질서를 이루는지 살펴보고자 한다. 논의를 위해 논문은 ‘허위의식적 취향’ 접근법을 활용하고자 한다. 이 접근법은 허위의식에 기반하는 소리 취향이 어떻게 소리들의 계층화 과정을 빚어내는지 살펴보는 방법론이다. 이 접근법을 <기생충> 소리 문화에 적용할때 두 가지가 발견된다. 첫째 ‘바로크 양식’은 소리 문화의 표면 영역에서 두 가족의 ‘허식적 진정주의’를 보여준다. 그러나 심층의 장에서는 박사장 부부가 물질화하는 ‘과시주의’를, 기택 가족이 물질화하지 못하는 ‘모방주의’ 및‘환영주의’를 보여준다. 둘째, 두 가족이 지향하는 ‘바로크 양식’들은 표면에서는 수평적 질서를 이루는 것 같지만, 심층에서는 수직적 질서를 이룬다. 논문은 이러한 <기생충> 소리 문화가 자본주의 한국·세계 사회의 성찰을 위한중요한 시사점을 던질 수 있기를 기대한다. Capitalism is one motive force for today s global society. One significant aspect of a capitalist global society is a polarized class structure. Interestingly, this structure is well shown in the global society s sound culture. Sound culture means culture which consists of sounds chosen by the member s ideology. Sounds implicitly display the class structure interlinked with their vertical thinking. Accordingly, this structure has uniquely been satirized by various works of art. A typical example is Parasite. Interestingly, the movie tells the class structure through Baroque styles forming the sound culture of the haves and have-nots. One of the Baroque style s social images is the upper ten beyond reach. In the film, while being used in various ways, Baroque styles show the inner workings of two families implicitly. Furthermore, these styles display a hidden class structure of capitalist Korean and global societies secretly. In consideration of this point, this paper intends to explore how Baroque styles forming the Parasite s sound culture display the inner workings of two classes, and what order Baroque styles create. To discuss these issues, this study employs an approach of false-conscious tastes. This approach aims to explore how false consciousness-based sonic tastes create the stratification of sounds. Applying this approach to the Parasite s sound culture, this paper finds two things. First, Baroque styles show ostentatious authenticism of two families at the surface level of the sound culture. Yet, at the deep level those styles display exhibitionism that Mr. and Mrs Park succeed in materializing, and imitationism and illusionism that the Kims fail to materialize. Second, Baroque styles which both families seek appear to form a horizontal order at the surface, but a vertical one at the deep. This research hopes that this Parasite s sound culture can carry implications to encourage reflection on capitalistic Korean and global societies.
