The effects of the change of swirI chamber shape change on engine performance is investigated for the design and development of a I.D.I. Diesel Engine. The changed factors are a wall angle of the swirl chamber. throat area. throat length. and glow plug protrusion in the indirect combustion chamber. The main effects of th i s work are that a gaseous emiss ion, \Ox reduced by decreasing<br/> the wall angle(B1) of the swirl chamber, and that a smoke reduced<br/> by decreasing the wallangle(B₂).And. the decrease of the<br/> throat area reduced a smoke and specific fuel consumption at the high speed range.<br/>

The behavior of the 2-stage spray was studied by using the schlieren method with the high pressure common-rail injection system. The spray injected 2 times with the interval of 0.3ms~ 1.5ms between the 1st and the 2nd spray in a modeled combustion chamber of constant volume bomb. In this case, the quantity of injected fuel of 1st and 2nd also changed. From the 2-stage injection on schlieren photograph, the 2nd spray goes further away than the 1st spray when the quantity of the 1st spray is less than that of 2nd spray. The dispersion of vapour to the combustion chamber is not affect in a 10% of 1st spray quantity. When the 1st spray quantity is more than the 2nd spray, the vapour scattering of spray is good.<br/>

Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the cupola height of bowl center and the reentrant angle of combustion chamber. and measured the cylinder pressure. engine performance and emissions of the engine using the total 11 kinds of the combustion chamber. The results are as follows. The NOx decreases by increasing the cupola height of bowl center because the decreasing of the maximum combustion pressure make worse the specific fuel consumption rate. The smoke increases by increasing the reentrant angle at high speed range of the engine. but decrease at low and medium speed range until the reentrant angle 15°<br/>

This paper describes an study electric injection system for diesel engines. It is needed effective fuel injection which controls the solenoid valve of fuel pump. To solve this, this paper proposes DCC-PWM method which can realize fast reply and low holding current for solenoid valve on/off. For the proposed design method, simulation tools of ACSL are used to analyze the system. And the single-chip microcomputer is used to reduce the size of controller and to improve flexibility. And the system's validity can be verified through the experimental results.
