Launched in October 2019, Northrop Grumman’s MEV-1 was the world’s first unmanned mission demonstrating the practical feasibility of on-orbit servicing. Although the concept of on-orbit servicing was proposed several decades ago, it has been developed to various mission concepts providing services such as orbit change, station keeping, propellant and equipment supply, upgrade, repair, on-orbit assembly and production, and space debris removal. The historical success of MEV-1 is expected to expand the market of on-orbit servicing for government agencies and commercial sectors worldwide. The on-orbit servicing essentially requires the utilization of a highly propellant efficient electric propulsion system due to the nature of the mission. In this study, the space mission analysis for a simple on-orbit mission involving Hall thruster is conducted, which is life extension mission for geostationary orbit satellites. In order to analyze the mission, design space exploration for various Hall thruster design variable combinations is performed. The values of design variables and operational parameters of Hall thruster suitable for the mission are proposed through design space analysis and optimization, and mission performance is derived. In addition, the direction of further improvement for the current on-orbit mission analysis process and space mission analysis involving Hall thruster is reviewed.

Current design process for the Hall effect thruster has relied on expensive experimental method based on the limited historical data. In this study, a proper design space for the Hall effect thruster is chosen and associated design space exploration is conducted based on a recently proposed numerical method in order to improve current design process. According to the results of the design space exploration, performance envelope is determined for the given design space and the correlations between performance metrics are analyzed. Further analysis shows that main factors in performances for the Hall effect thruster are the anode mass flow rate and the discharge voltage.

As the global demand for small satellites weighing less than 500 kg increases, the development and operation of dedicated small launch vehicles increase significantly. The responsiveness of a launch vehicle that puts a small satellite into a target orbit at the desired time is attracting attention. As a result, interest in the air launch is increasing in the rapid establishment of a constellation. As the demand for small satellites in south Korea increases, this study performed analyses on the applicability of an air launch vehicle using a large civil aircraft considering the geographical environment. In terms of responsiveness, mission response times were compared and analyzed for air launch vehicles and ground small and large vehicles. In addition, an air vehicle and a small ground vehicle were quantitatively compared and analyzed for the orbital insertion performance. As a result of the analysis, the air launch vehicle has limited responsiveness in Korea regarding rapid satellite constellation establishment. However, it can be an effective alternative for low inclination angle orbit insertion with the benefit of a fast turnaround time. Furthermore, the performance of the orbital injection is close to that of the ground small launch vehicle, and the high efficiency in terms of the required propellant mass is possible, so air launch can be an effective launch means for putting small satellites into orbit in Korea.

A wind tunnel test for the scaled parachute models was performed to verify aerodynamic characteristics for practical usage of Korean low cost low altitude aerial delivery system. The cruciform shaped cargo parachute models for heavy and light weight were ejected into wind tunnel test section; and the drag forces acting on the models in steady condition were measured in accordance with velocity. Also, the maximum opening forces during inflation were obtained and captured by a high speed camera to analyze the inflation characteristics and evaluate the design of the low cost aerial delivery system. The results showed a reliable stability and met the design requirement of delivery operation system for R.O.K Air Force.
