Bleached kraft pulps with different dimensions were refined by the refiner plates designed and manufactured for this study. One pulp has a length-weighted mean fiber length of 2.90 mm and a coarseness of 15.5 mg/100 m. Another pulp has a length-weighted mean fiber length of 0.68 mm and a coarseness of 9.25 mg/100 m. The long- and thick-fiber pulp (Pulp I) was refined by the plate of coarse fillings with lower cutting edge length (CEL), and the short- and thin-fiber pulp (Pulp II) was refined by the plate of fine fillings with higher CEL. The fiber length of pulp I was sharply reduced at the beginning of refining, and, on the other hand, that of pulp II was more slowly reduced. Coarse fillings against Pulp I led to more cutting rather than fibrillation, and fine fillings against Pulp II promoted more external and internal fibrillation. Due to the dimensional characteristics, the long and coarse fibers required more refining energy in gaining the designated freeness level than did the short and thin fibers. At a given refining amount, the finer fillings led to the slower increment in tensile strength than did the coarser fillings. However, tear strength of pulp I sharply improved at first and thereafter rapidly dropped, whereas pulp II steadily increased and then gradually decreased with prolonged refining. Based on these results, more gentle refining for the pulp such as pulp II was required to obtain desirable fibrillation and energy savings, and therefore a novel manufacturing technology such as a laser technology and diffusion bonding differently from casting should be applied to develop much finer filling with the combination of high cutting edge length and hydraulic capacity.

The OGC(OpenGIS Consortium), which is standardization organization of geographic data, have been studied standard for geographic data such as GML and GML based annotation for image and map. Annotation for map is applicable in various ways, understanding about geographic data, decision making and exchange of communication. For instance, Map annotation can be used for highlighting tour-course as symbols or explaining it as text on a map in tourism. This study suggests some annotation methodology for national digital map and presents a simple implementation of it. Firstly, this study suggests a way of updating OGC annotation schema which corresponds with DXF format and creating a GML application schema using the updated OGC annotation schema. Also it suggest a way of converting instance documents of annotated map to VML document with XSLT and VML for display. Later, it is needed to study for supporting another formats as well as DXF format. In addition, it is needed to study for managing the history of updated map entity with annotation in Local governments UIS(Urban Information System) in practical aspects.

Refining in stock preparation is done by two separate intensities such as gentle and harsh refining. If the optimum intensity during refining is applied to pulp fibers, a great quality of paper can be produced with reduced operating costs. Softwood bleached kraft pulp (SwBKP) was used to evaluate the effects of refining intensity on pulp and paper properties. The plates with two different fillings for the study was designed and casted by the research team in Korea. Harsh refining used the plate with coarser fillings (cutting edge length = 354.5 m/rev) and gentle refining did the one with finer fillings (cutting edge length = 829 m/rev). Both harsh refining and gentle refining of SwBKP representatively displayed a similar drop in freeness at the same amount of refining, even though more fines and shorter fibers were generated by harsh refining. However, gentle refining developed greater strength properties of paper than did harsh refining, while paper bulk was more reduced in gentle refining. In conclusion, more finer plate fillings is required to develop pulp and paper properties faster than the conventional ones without reducing a stock flow rate during refining.
