한국 영자신문에 쓰인 고빈도 동사의 논항가 유형과 사용양상 분석

고광윤 ( Gwang Yoon Goh ),박성우 ( Sung Woo Park ) 경희대학교 언어연구소 2008 언어연구 Vol.25 No.2

The language of English newspapers in Korea, though grammatically almost perfect, shows many different types of “nonnativeness”. This paper is a corpus-based analysis of the language of Korean English newspapers, and its main goal is to show how its verbal valency patterns differ from those in the language of American English newspapers and to characterize the differences and/or similarities observed in the comparison. The discussions of this study are mainly based on the analysis of high frequency verbs from the Korean English Newspaper Corpus (built for this study from the three major Korean English newspapers including The Korea Herald, The Korea Times, and JoongAng Daily) and the press categories of the Frown Corpus (Categories A, B, and C). 한국적 영어학과 영어 코퍼스의 활용

        고광윤(Goh Gwang-Yoon) 한국영어학학회 2005 영어학연구 Vol.- No.19

English linguistics of Korea, despite its considerable development and growth for thc last 50 years, has continued to lag behind that of not only the US and the UK but also many European countries and even Japan as well. The current state of English linguistics of Korea seems to be closely related, above all, to our lack of the native speaker's intuition about English and the failure in developing a successful model of Korean-style English linguistics which enables us to overcome our weaknesses and limitations and to make the best use of our strengths. The purpose of this paper is to show the possibility of developing a model of internationally competitive Korean-style English linguistics, which is proposed to be based on the ingenious use of English corpora I will first briefly review and evaluate the study of English linguistics in Korea. Then I will consider the question of how English corpora such as the BNC can and/or should be used for dealing with certain problems in English linguistics. I will conclude this paper by suggesting future directions for Korean English linguistics in connection with important problems confronting us.

영어 동명사의 대명사 주어에 대한 코퍼스 기반 연구

        고광윤(Goh Gwang-Yoon) 한국영어학학회 2012 영어학연구 Vol.18 No.1

Although the variation between Poss-ing (= possessive + gerund) and Acc-ing (= objective + gerund) has long been among the most contentious issues in English grammar, few previous studies have provided an extensive empirical analysis of the variation. This study examines the use of the pronominal subject preceding a verbal gerund on the base of the data from seven English corpora. The results indicate that although both possessive and objective are widely attested in American and British English, their use varies considerably across genre and grammatical function, while showing a consistent historical change. Thus, the objective is most frequent in spoken texts but least common in academic texts, and the possessive shows the opposite distribution. Moreover, the possessive is almost always chosen when the gerund functions as a sentential subject, while the objective is most heavily used when the gerund occurs as a verbal object. Diachronically, the use of the objective, the innovative form, has shown a continuous increase in the last two hundred years, gradually threatening the dominant status of the possessive, the conservative form, and finally becoming the unmarked form in American English around the 1930s.

한국 신문의 영어 번역에 나타난 번역 보편소의 코퍼스 기반 분석

고광윤 ( Goh Gwang-yoon ),이영희 ( Lee Younghee ) 경희대학교 비교문화연구소 2016 비교문화연구 Vol.45 No.-

This article examines distinctive linguistic shifts of translational English in an effort to verify the validity of the translation universals hypotheses, including simplification, explicitation, normalization and leveling-out, which have been most heavily explored to date. A large-scale study involving comparable corpora of translated and non-translated English newspaper texts has been carried out to typify particular linguistic attributes inherent in translated texts. The main findings are as follows. First, by employing the parameters of STTR, top-to-bottom frequency words, and mean values of sentence lengths, the translational instances of simplification have been detected across the translated English newspaper corpora. In contrast, the portion of function words produced contrary results, which in turn suggests that this feature might not constitute an effective test of the hypothesis. Second, it was found that the use of connectives was more salient in original English newspaper texts than translated English texts, being incompatible with the explicitation hypothesis. Third, as an indicator of translational normalization, lexical bundles were found to be more pervasive in translated texts than in non-translated texts, which is expected from and therefore support the normalization hypothesis. Finally, the standard deviations of both STTR and mean sentence lengths turned out to be higher in translated texts, indicating that the translated English newspaper texts were less leveled out within the same corpus group, which is opposed to what the leveling-out hypothesis postulates. Overall, the results suggest that not all four hypotheses may qualify for the label translation universals, or at least that some translational predictors are not feasible enough to evaluate the effectiveness of the translation universals hypotheses.

영어 Tough-구문에 대한 코퍼스 바탕 연구

        고광윤(Goh Gwang-Yoon) 한국영어학학회 2006 영어학연구 Vol.- No.22

Although a great many studies have dealt with the tough-construction in English, they have mainly focused on the syntactic and semantic aspects of the construction from a theoretical standpoint, thereby ignoring and/or neglecting the problems concerning its uses. This paper is a corpus-based analysis of the English tough-construction and its it-analog construction, and its main goal is to explain what influences the choice between the two related constructions. On the basis of the search results of the four major tough-adjectives, difficult, easy, hard, and impossible, in the four related English corpora including Brown, Frown, LOB, and FLOB corpora, this paper first discusses general aspects of the two constructions in use, and then identifies five main linguistic factors that influence the language user’s choice between a tough-sentence and its it-analog counterpart and explains how those factors work together in making such a choice.

중학교 영어 교과서의 어휘적 연계성에 대한 코퍼스 바탕 연구

        고광윤(Goh Gwang-Yoon),박정준(Park Jung-Joon) 한국영어학학회 2007 영어학연구 Vol.- No.24

This study is a corpus-based analysis of Korean middle school English textbooks and it aims to verify whether their English vocabulary is presented with sufficient educational continuity by examining the five most widely used series of middle school English textbooks (7th-9th grades). In particular, the study analyzes TTR (type-token ratio), the distribution of new words, average sentence length, and other relevant factors in the 15 middle school English textbooks in order to evaluate the continuity between different chapters of each textbook and between textbooks of different grades. The results of this study, above all, show that more continuity is needed in the introduction of new words and their distribution although there is no significant problem in other aspects of vocabulary between English textbooks of two consecutive levels.
