The purpose of this study is to examine its developmental aspects of the type and frequency and the functions of ‘Wh’-words from 2 to 5 years old. The participants were 40 ordinary children of even genders from 2 to 5 years old. 15 ‘Wh’-words were analyzed for the number of the type and token frequency by age and gender. Each token was classified as interrogative, indefinite and discourse function. The results are as follows. (1) The number of the types of ‘Wh’-words increased by the age and the gender. Token frequency of ‘Wh’-words increased by the age of 4 but decreased in 4-5 years old, and the gap decreased in 5 years old. (2) Interrogative function was used the most, indefinite function the second and discourse function the third. The difference of interrogative function and indefinite function in its number is noticeable by age. Gender only affects on its number in interrogative function. It is inferred that the asking questions using ‘Wh’-words decrease as the age rises, because the number of the types increased according to age. However, token frequency decreased around 4 or 5 years old. This shows that ‘Wh’-words are used as indefinite and discourse function as well as for interrogative function. Also, this shows that production of ‘Wh’-words precedes comprehension of them.
