이 연구는 B.C 3000년경 메소포타미아 지역을 중심으로 시작되어 B.C 600년경 에트루리아에서 기술적 완성도의 절정을 맞이한 금속표면장식 기법인 그래뉼레이션의 현대적 적용사례에 관한 연구이다. 그래뉼레이션은 고도의 기술숙련과 과학 이론, 섬세한 디자인 적용이 요구되는 세공 기술로 금속을 다루어 온 인류의 역사적 발전을 함축하고 있는 중요 기법이다. 중세에 단절되었던 그레뉼레이션은 19세기 유럽의 신고전주의의 영향으로 그 가치가 재조명되었으며, 20세기 초 과학기술을 기반으로 한 연구자들과 금속공예가들의 노력으로 옛 제작방식이 복원되었다. 한편, 20세기 중반부터 본격화된 현대금속공예 분야는 작가의 의도와 개성 있는 표현이 중요하며 이를 뒷받침 할 다양한 표현방식과 새로운 재료에 대한 실험이 활발하게 진행되어 왔다. 이와 더불어 금속공예의 전통기법을 재발견하고 새롭게 적용하는 것 역시 작품의 깊이와 개성을 담보할 수 있는 중요한 방법이라는 인식이 확산되고 있다. 그래뉼레이션을 현대적으로 활용하는 작가 중 존 폴 밀러는 그래뉼레이션에 칠보를 접목하여 서로 다른 기법과 조화롭게 적용될 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였으며, 로버트 베인즈는 분체도장, 플라스틱 등, 현대적 기술과 재료를 혼합함으로써 어렵고 진부한 전통기법으로 인식되어온 그래뉼레이션을 새롭게 바라보게 한다. 데이비드 후케는 기물에 그래뉼레이션을 적용함으로써 기법의 일반적인 적용 범위에 대한 고정관념을 뛰어넘고, 미니멀한 조형성을 통해 현대적 미감과의 조화 가능성을 보여준다. 한나 베드포드는 기존의 전통적인 패턴이 아닌 자유롭고 유기적인 배열을 통해 그래뉼레이션에 고착된 고로한 이미지를 걷어내고 특별한 디자인 요소로 현대장신구에 활용될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이와 같이 그래뉼레이션은 현대금속공예 분야를 보다 풍요롭게 발전시킬 수 있는 표현기법으로써 연구 가치와 가능성이 충분히 입증되고 있으며, 향후 이 기법에 대한 실험적 탐구와 활용이 꾸준히 증가할 것이라 전망한다. 이번 연구가 그래뉼레이션의 역사 및 발전과 현대적 활용양상을 정리한 사례자료로써 활용되고 새로운 방향으로의 적용 가능성을 보다 확장시키는 기초연구가 되기를 기대한다. This study describes how the decoration technique on metal surface called granulation, which was generated from Mesopotamia around B.C 3000 and reached its peak in terms of perfection of technical execution in Etruria around B.C 600, is being applied in a modern way. The artistic form of granulation, which came to a halt in the Middle Ages, experienced a revival of its value inspired by Neoclassicism in Europe in the 19th century and restoration of ancient method through tremendous efforts of researchers and metal craftsmen based on scientific technology in the early 20th century. John Paul Miller, who is known for the art of granulation with sophisticated modern technique, proposed the possibility of harmonious application with other techniques by applying Enamel to granulation, while Robert Baines, who integrated modern technology and materials including Powder Coating and plastic, introduced a new prospective into granulation which was seen as difficult and stale traditional technique. David Huycke applied granulation technique to objects, going beyond the fixed ideas on general scope of granulation application as well as presenting the possibility of harmony with modern artistic beauty through minimal formativeness. Hannah Bedford applied natural and organic growth patterns rather than the existing traditional patterns to shake off fixed and old-fashioned images of granulation, thus demonstrating that granulation can be utilized for contemporary Jewelry as a special decorative motif. In this sense, granulation has proved its value to be studied and the possibility to further develop contemporary metalsmith. Also, the consistent increase in experimental researches and utilizations of granulation is forecasted in the future.
