디지털 시네마에서 H.264/AVC와 JPEG2000의 압축 성능 비교 연구

올해를 기점으로 100년을 이어온 필름 영화는 역사의 뒤안길로 정차 사라질 전망이다. 제작과 배급, 상영 등 전 과정이 디지털로 이루어지는 디지털시네마 세상이 열린다. 연간 100억원의 비용 절감이 기대되는 프린트 작업 및 배송의 디지털화에서 편집 및 전송이 가능하기 위해서는 압축이 핵심 기술이다. 디지털 시네마의 압축 표준으로는 정지 영상 압축의 국제 표준인 JPEG2000이 선정되어 있다. 그러나 영상 압축의 또 하나의 국제 표준인 H.264/AVC는 현재까지 압축 표준에 있어 큰 효율을 달성해왔다. 본 논문에서는 H.264/AVC와 JPEG2000의 성능을 비교 연구하였다. 실험은 JPEG2000이 화면 내 예측, 변환 기술만을 사용하는 것을 고려하여 H.264/AVC High profile의 intra frame 만을 사용하였다. 영상은 3가지 HD용 표준 시퀀스를 사용하였으며 인코딩의 복잡도를 고려하여 처음 64프레임을 사용하였다. 실험 결과를 통해 우리는 디지털 시네마에서 JPEG2000을 대신할 압축 표준으로 H.264/AVC의 강한 잠재력을 증명했다. With this year as the starting point, film movie is expected to disappear behind the history. All processes of the production of films, distribution, screening and so on will be digitalized. To be possible digitalizing printing work and distribution which is expected to save 10 billion won each year, compression is core technology. Coding standards of digital cinema is JPEG2000 that is international still image coding standards. But H.264/AVC which is another international standards achieves considerably higher coding efficiency. This contribution reports the performance comparison of JPEG2000 with H.264/AVC. We have been used for only intra frame of H.264/AVC High profile considering JPEG2000 which have been used for intra prediction and transform. We used for first 64 frames image sampled HD standards sequence considering complexity of encoding. As a result, we show that H.264/AVC has strong potential as a standard instead of JPEG2000 in digital cinema.
