Identifying destination images is vital in tourism marketing and can be regarded as a prerequisite for destination promotion. As the sum of beliefs, ideas and impressions that a person has of a destination, the image is a crucial component of the tourism product and tourists choice of a destination is greatly influenced by their perceptions of the destination. This paper seeks to assess perceived images of Australia as a holiday destination by Korean students. Data were obtained through a survey questionnaire of 161 Korean students who enrolled in the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) in New South Wales. Both open-ended methods and perception grid assessments of destination attractiveness attributes were performed and it was revealed that Australia was generally perceived as a favourable holiday destination for the Korean students. Not surprisingly, clean and beautiful natural environments and a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere served as the most dominant destination images of Australia to younger Koreans. While the above components represented a common image of Australia as a holiday destination in both free elicited and perception grid approaches, some unique perceptions were also found from the open-ended methods which could not be detected from the structured methods. The result of freely elicited perceptions showed that unique animals and the Opera House were perceived as part of a symbolic image of Australia. Furthermore, the result of perception grid analysis revealed that some cultural activities are located in problem areas where attributes are evaluated as important, but as being offered below the expected level. The results suggest that to present Australia as a cultural tourism destination for younger Koreans, it needs to promote more actively cultural tourism and to deliver more information about cultural tourism activities in Australia.
