Papercutting is an image carrier of Chinese folk culture. It is rich in history and has influenced people's life in every aspect. By means of certain art forms of papercutting such as calling-back-the-lost-soul and chichen-seizing-boy papercuttings, people express their wishes and desires for happiness and good fortune as well as the expelling of their bad luck and disasters. Besides, papercutting plays a very important part in the rituals of the folk life in China. For example, for the wedding people will cut various “happiness flowers” with bight red-paper to wish the new couple a happy life with healthy children. And at the funeral ceremony papercuttings serve as a guide for the dead to another world. Often a paradise, a reproduction of the real world, is created, as a benediction to the dead and a condolence to those whose beloved is dead. In addition, papercuttings have special significance at festivals and on holidays. At the New Year's Festival or the Lantern Festival, for example, they are used to heighten the joyous atmosphere and can reflect the psychology, aesthetic judgement and cultural orientation of the Chinese people. Papercutting, as a folk art, has become a indispensable part of people's life.
