Detailed reading Lu Xun’s texts when he stayed in Japan, this paper has questioned many present popular “conclusions” in the academic circles. “Today’s China” in Lu Xun’s period was malaise and no “modern”, but in exotic Japan, the modern achievements and problems were both obvious, so he might as well get an experience of modernity to “understand thoroughly the general trend of the world”. Lu Xun’s criticism of modernity is not flatly denies the meaning of modernization theory, the “bad reputation” of the new doctrine lies in that the language is “new”, but there is no corresponding “new spirit”. Lu Xun puts forward the subject of the “cultivating person”, instead of sharply demarcating from the modernization theory, it is to establish spirit foundation which modern people need. In this way, the unique and true value of Lu Xun’s thinking about “today’s China” is not to “surpass”, but to “seek roots”.
