The quantity of pentose, hexose and sucrose which are contained in the sap of 16 different plant species of the genus Acer growing in Korea is determined. The results showed that, of these 16 species, Acer mono MAX, contained the largest amount of pentose (20.4%) and that A. mono MAX. var. paxii HONDA contains the next largest (19.7%). Also A. mono MAX. contained the largest amount of hexose (17.4%) and A. mono MAX. var. paxii HONDA contained the next largest(15.1%). The plants which contained the largest amounts of sucrose was A. mono MAX. and A. takesimense HAKAI(1.9%). The plant containing the next largest amount of sucrose was A. tschonoskii MAX. var. rubrips NAKAI (1.8%).

Recently, with the growth of food industry and the improvement of the diet habits according as the imcome increase, human being in bursting with many desires such as the nutritive balance, the intake of safer food, and so forth. To meet the rapid increase in demand and balance of supply in proportion to the increase in population, the time of mass production was arrived from that of taking simply primary natured food. Safety problems of food resulted from mass processed production are also arising as international issues. Microbial contaminations, chemical contaminations and environmental pollutants are common threatened problems on the safety of food and moreover, contamination of meat(antibiotics, antivacterial agents, hormones) are recently becoming one of the important problems for the safety of food. To minimize the hazard caused by these food contaminant, each countries established, in their own way the permitted limits of residues of food contaminants(artificial or nonartificial) and are continuing extensive study for safer supply of food.

The present study is involved with the prolactin secretion from anterior pituitary gland by ginseng saponin since it was handled down by tradition that ginseng might influence the milk secretion when it was given to nursing mother. To investigate the effect of saponin on the prolactin porduction or release from the anterior pituitary gland, cell culture study and whole animal studies were carried out. For the cell culture study, enzymatically dispersed anterior pituitary cells of rat anterior pituitary gland in HEPES buffers containing trypsin were used. Ginseng saponin was added to the culture media and the amount of prolactin produced in the cell culture media was determined by radioimmunoassay(RIA) technique. Dose-dependent increases of prolactin with ginseng saponin were observed, whereas, no change was observed without ginseng treatment. For the whole animal study, normal and castrated rats which previously connulated into the heart via the right juglar vein were used. The prolactin concentration in plasma were determined by using the technique of RIA. In normal rats, prolactin concentration in plasma were elevated dramatically after 1 hour of ginseng saponin administration, whereas, instantaneous increases were observed in castrated rats. For prolactin assay by RIA, NIAMDD Rat Prolactin Kit and NIAMDD Rat Prolactin RP-1 were used as standard. The results indicate that ginseng saponins increase the release of prolacin from the anterior pituitary gland and production of prolactin from the cell in rats.
