        墓制를 通해 본 高句麗의 正體性

        池炳穆(JI Byong-mok),曺永鉉(토론자) 고구려발해학회 2004 고구려발해연구 Vol.18 No.-

This paper aims to studying on the position of Koguryo "stone piled" tombs (cairns) among tomb styles of the North East Asia. Therefore it intends to understand a part of the identity of Koguryo society. Two groups of burial styles were constructed in the North East Asia. One is earthen type, the other stone type. It is divided into various tombs by the intrinsic and extrinsic features of them. It is also classified as vertical type and horizontal type by the methods of placing a dead body into burial space. Two types of tomb were practiced throughout the duration of the Koguryo kingdom. The first, "stone piled" tombs (cairns), mostly was constructed in the first half of Koguryo period. The other is "earthen mound" tomb with stone built chamber sometimes with mural paintings, which are practiced with Chinese influence in the second half. The "stone piled" tombs (cairns) have in common with other stone tombs (ex. stone cist, dolmen, etc.) from the viewpoint of using the stone as a main material. At the same time it is different from the others by the facts that the burial space in this type of Koguryo tomb is located over the ground and the evolution of internal and external shape as time passes. They gradually acquired a stone base and became stepped pyramids and stone chamber. While the "stone piled" tombs (cairns) of Koguryo was constructed in the middle region of the liver Amnok(Yalu), where are called as "the territory of Proto Koguryo", the burial style of the surrounding region is dominated by the earthen tomb with wooden coffin originated from China. This type of tomb was rapidly spread to the North East Asia excepting the "the territory of Proto Koguryo". Koguryo frequently had cultural and economical exchanges with other societies of the North East Asia. But their main burial type "stone piled" tombs (cairns) kept up their original characteristics and developed it for several hundred years. It is one of the most representative identities of Koguryo society.
