A diallel cross from eight red pepper varieties was used to investigate combining ability and gene action for main stem length, branch length, plant height and main stem diameter. The results were as follows. Significantly additive and dominance effects were observed for all plant height characters. A comparison of their relative magnitudes indicated additive genetic variances were much more important than non-additive genetic variances. It was observed that average degree of dominance for main stem length, branch length, and plant height were partial dominance, and main stem diameter was complete dominance. The directions of dominance were positive for all plant height characters. The minimum number of dominant alleles controlling the overall parental differences were estimated as one for main stem length, branch length and main stem diameter, and two for plant height. Heritabilities in narrow and broad sense were fairly high for all plant height characters.

This study was performed to obtain basic informations for breeding early maturing varieties in red pepper. Eight parent varieties and twenty eight diallel crosses between them were used as materials. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis for main stem length, branch length, plant height and main stem diameter, corelations between 4 plant height characters and corelations between plant height characters and days to first flower were investigated. From the analysis of variance, the 1% level significances were observed among parents and F₁s in main stem length, branch length, plant height and main stem diameter. The means of F₁s were significantly longer than those of parents in all plant height characters. Degree and direction of heterosis and heterobeltiosis varied greatly with different crosses and most of F₁ hybrids showed positive partial dominace or over dominance in all plant height characters. Average degree of dominance for main stem length and branch length were partial dominant and those for plant height and main stem diameter were almost complete dominant. In F₁ hybrids, positively significant corelations between main stem length, branch length, plant height, main stem diameter and days to first flower were observed except between main stem length and branch length and between branch length and days to first flower. Highly significant corelations between mid - parents and F₁ hybrids were observed in all plant height characters.

This study was performed to obtain the basic informations on days to first flower in red pepper. Eight parent varieties and twenty eight F₁ hybrids from 8X8 half diallel cross were used as the materials, and heterosis, combining ability, the degree and direction of dominance, and heritability were evaluated. The 1% significances in day to first flower were observed among parents and F₁s, and the mean of F₁s was not significantly longer than parents. Positive and negative heterosis and heterobeltiosis were observed. Both average heterosis and heterobeltiosis were negative. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances were highly significant, and GCA variances were greater than SCA variances. Partial dominance was observed in days to first flower and the direction of dominance was negative excluding Chunan and Saegochu varieties. The number of effective gene was estimated as one, and heritabilities in narrow and broad sense were fairly high.
