Speakers of the Korean language are well aware of the complicated system of speech levels in their daily use of the language. Those who speak the language as their mother tongue are often proud of the fact that their language is so rich in means of expressing such subtle nuances of emotion and minute differences in relationships, particularly through the use or nonuse of so-called "honorifics." But Koreans are very often ignorant of the fact that there are similar phenomena in foreign tongues as well, including English and other Western languages which are usually considered to be languages of rather casual and classless societies. The present paper is of pedagocial rather than academic or theoretical orientation, Its primary aim is to point out that those Western languages taught in Korea as major foreign languages do have their own means of marking sociolinguistic aspects of the speech situation, including relationships between the speaker and hearer. This study makes a strong recommendation that students of foreign languages should begin their studies with the more formal and sophisticated levels of the languages rather than with miscellaneous informal of casual varieties. These casual varieties are often taught under attrative labels, such as "living English" and "conversational English." Beginners, who learn these varieties early in their language study, form habits which can lead to serious social blunders in their future use of the language.
