The author observed the Langerhans cells in human inflamed gingiva in relation to the intensity of inflammation. The detection of Langerhans cells was accomplished by immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein. The Langerhans cells were calculated by light microscope in 3 or 4 of 200 magnified field and meaned the total number of calculated cells by observed number of field. The S-100 positive cells in connective tissue were called as indeterminate cell (IC). The degree of inflammation was depended on the intensity of inflammatory cell infiltration and was designated as degree 0, 1, 2, 3. The results were as follows. 1. For this study, 22 cases in human gingiva were selected for observing Langerhans cells and indeterminate cells. The number of Langerhans cells and indeterminate cells was calculated from 0 to 26 in a field. 2. The Langerhans cells were stained as reddish brown and had 3 or 4 dendrites and they were almost located in the prickle cell layer. 3. The cell body of indeterminate cell in dermis was larger than the Langerhans cells and had dendrites. The stainability of indeterminate cells which were stained intensly or lightly was extremly various. 4. In case of degree 0 of inflammatory reaction, the Langerhans cells (average number 0.8) and indeterminate cells (average number 0.3) were scarcely found. The Langerhans cells were not found in four of ten field and the indeterminate cells were not found in seven of the fields. 5. The number of the Langerhans cells and indeterminate cells was increased along with the intensity of inflammation and they were 2.14 and 1.35 in degree 1, 2.96 and 3.00 in degree 2 and 4.17 and 4.04 in degree of 3. Although the number of Langerhans cells and indeterminate cells was extremly various in accordance with the degree of inflammation, there are several factors which influence the number of Langerhans cells and indeterminate cells in gingiva.

To study the effect of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the activity of osteoclast, five bone cell populations were isolated by sequential enzyme digestion of fetal rat calvaria and effect of LPS on the acid and alkaline phosphatase activity was studied. And also, effect of LPS on the ^45Ca release from fetal rat ulnae and radii, and effects of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors on the LPS-induced bone resorption in organ culture were studied. Calvaria from rat fetus at 19th day of gestation, were sequentially digested by enzyme solution (collagenase, trypsin and EDTA) for 10, 10, 10, 20 and 20 min. (population I-V). Effect of LPS on the acid and alkaline phosphatase activity of each bone cell population was determined after 24 hr-incubation with 1㎍/ml or 10㎍/ml LPS. Ulnae and radii were removed from 19-day old fetal rats, prelabelled by subcutaneous injection of 200μCi ^45CaCl_2 into their mother on the 17th day of gestation. Afater 24 hours, media was changed with media containing LPS (1㎍/ml or 10㎍/ml) or LPS+ carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (10mM sulfanilamide or 1mM dichlorphenamide) and cultured for 72 hours. Radioactivities of ^45Ca released into media were determined after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Effects of LPS and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors were observed by the ratio of %-release of ^45Ca between paired control and experimental group. The observed results were as follows: 1. Basal activities of acid phosphatase were higher in early released cell populations than late populations and basal level of alkaline phosphatase was reversed. 2. LPS (1㎍/ml and 10㎍/ml) increased the acid phosphatase activity in populations Ⅰ and Ⅱ significantly. 3. LPS (1㎍/ml and 10㎍/ml) decreased the alkaline phosphatase activity of all bone cell populations and significantly inhibited the enzyme activity in populations Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ and Ⅴ. 4. LPS supplemented in media for 72 hours increased the ^45Ca release significantly after 48 and 72 hours of culture. 5. LPS-induced ^45Ca release was inhibited significantly by 10mM sulfanilamide after 72 hours of culture. 6. LPS-induced ^45Ca release was inhibited significantly by 1 mM dichlorphenamide after 48 and 72 hours of culture.

방사선조사후 타액선 조직세포변화에 따른 타액분비의 감소에 관한 실험적 연구

After single fraction of 2, 5, 10 Gy irradiation on submandibular gland of 32 male rats, weighting 150 gm, respectively, these animal were sacrificed after 1, 7, 15 hours, 1, 3, 7, 14 days after irradiation. And excised submandibular gland were fixed in Bouin's solution for 2 hours. Paraffin sections were stained with H & E, and PAS for change of salivary gland tissue in order to get regeneration of salivary gland tissue cells and saliva secretion after irradiation. The results were following. 1. In PAS statining after 3 days of 5 Gy irradiation, decreased mucine serction of serous cells were seen, and after 7 dyas of 10 Gy irradiation, decreased mucine secretion of mucous cells were seen. Increased saliva secretion except mucous cells after 14 days was seen, but no resecretion of salivary gland tissue cells was observed in 10 Gy irradiation. 2. After 3 days of 2 Gy irradiation, 1 day of 5 Gy, and 15 yours of 10 Gy, degeneration of serous cells was seen and regeneration of these cells was seen after 14 days except 10 Gy irradiation.

Garre씨 골수염의 증례보고

Authors experienced Garre's osteomyelitis that showed 24 years male patient who visited the Dental Hospital of College of Dentistry of Dankook University because of right facial asymmetry from recurred swelling in right mandibular angle area. Because we thought that this case was rare, we examined the clinical, radiological, histopathological features, and discussed the etiologic factors and the pathogenesis of Garre's osteomyelitis through a review of literature. The results were as followings. 1. In clinical features, 24 years male patient showed right facial asymmetry from recurred swelling in right mandibular angle area. 2. In radiographic features, slight periosteal bone formation in right mandibular angle area was found. 3. In histopathologic features, parallel trabecular orientation that occurred perpendicular to the cortex was associated with medullary trabecular in the back ground of hemorragic loose connective tissue with lymphocytes and plasma cells. Many lamellated trabecular lined by active osteoblast cells were found. In other area, empty lacunae in trabecular were observed. 4. We considered the etiologic focus to be a low grade infection from prolonged infection right 1st mandibular molar.

임신성 종양 및 화농성 육아종에 대한 임상 및 병리조직학적 연구

Pregnancy tumor is frequent disease entity in pregnant women and also pyogenic granuloma is very frequent disease entity in oral cavity, but at presnet day, the etiology and behavior of these disease is not clear. Therefore authors studied pregnancy tumor and pyogenic granuloma which have been experienced in Department of Periodontics of Dental Infirmary of Dankook University, and present preganacy tumor 8 cases and pyogenic granuloma 12 cases. Authors elicit the following results. 1. Pyogenic granuloma has a prediction for age, second decades to fifth decades of life and frequently occurs as twice as in female. 2. Pregnancy tumor more frequently occurs at the mixilla than mandibule and more frequently occurs at the anterior teeth area. On the contrary pyogenic granuloma has a prediction for mandible and molar area. Clinical sign and symptom shows swelling and hemorrhage on mild stimulation in both disease. 3. Pregnancy tumor and pyogenic granuloma may be occurred by specific reaction about nonspecific inflammation from local irritation. 4. The cause of non-complete regression of pregnancy tumor and pyogenic granuloma after parturition and subside of inflammation may be considered fibromatous change of these lesion.

형질세포치은염에 대한 증례보고

After authors experienced patients with plasma cell gingivitis, who had visited Department of Periodontics of Dental Hospital of Dnakook University from 1984 to 1990, authors selected 13 cases which were very similar with plasma cell gingivitis on clinical and histopathological aspect, and then re-examined these 13 cases about following standards, sudden onset of the lesion, no favorable result on medicinal and surgical treatment, dense infiltration of plasma cell, eosinophils in the Hematoxylin-Eosin stain, mast cells in Toluidine-Blue stain. Authors concluded that 4 cases are exactly consistent with plasma cell gingivitis. Authors studied these 4 cases about clinical and histopathological feature, and reviewed the past case report and literature. The following results were elicited. 1. Clinical sign and symptom has generalized feature in oral cavity, but when the disease occurs at the lips, the lower lips shows more severe manifestation. And the disease have a predilection for female but do not have prediliection for any age. 2. The most characteristic feature of the plasma cell gingivitis is dense plasma cell infiltration in light microscope, and other characteristic microscopic features are as followings; microvesicles in the epithelial layer, proliferation of epithelium, proliferation of papillary layer in connective tissue, dilatation of capillaries and occasional infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells. 3. Plasma cell gingivitis is specific immunological reaction that plasma cells chiefly react with certain allergen but this immunological reaction is limited on few population.
